Caro Kann themes and positional tips

Hi, recently Ive started playing the caro kann more in games, as I enjoy playing different types of positions in chess, and I'm trying to improve my positional understanding. However I played a game OTB that just stumped me. I didn't know what I did wrong, when, and why it was wrong. The problem with my position was that I had a hard time finding a good plan. I just wasn't quite sure what to do at some points without weakening my position.

Time control was game 90 with 30 second increment.

I was sick for this tournament but still shouldn't have missed alot of the things I did...in the game previous to this one I missed a mate in 3...TWICE.

Thanks to anyone that decides to give me their input on the game, especially the early middle game that I feel like I had no ideas in.

yeah...you just basically castled right into trouble without any counterplay. If you think about it,it's gonna take you ages to open a file on the kingside due to your pawn formation. These opposite castling positions are basically a race to checkmate the opponent's king.0-0 was more prudent.

But was his attack ever there? Or did I just defend bad, with a6

yeah a6 is too passive.maybe 16...Qd7 is a move,getting out of the pin,followed by 17...f6 18.exf6 Bxf6 putting pressure on the d4 pawn.

Is him getting his knight to e4 not an issue in this setup?

One thing that caught my eye was dxc4, I might have been tempted to leave things as is...if Be2 or Bd3, then you can capture with a tempo.  Maybe I'm missing some tactics though in not taking.

Possibly. Anyone know any good caro kann DVDs or books? I'm interested in learning different ideas in these setups. It seems I understand nothing in these positions.

I play the Caro Kann a lot, and from my point of view -

Move ...7 I would have developed the knight to d7, then planned to push the c-pawn to c5 at some point.

Move ...10 If I get the chance to trade white-squared-bishops in the advanced Caro Kann, then I almost always do so, as the pawns tend to be on white squares, limiting the space you have to move your bishop. It's also a pretty easy target for your oppenents knights.

After these two moves, you had no pawns left in the centre, and your oppenent dominated that area. Also, caslting queenside was probably a bad idea.

In the advanced Caro Kann, around move 7 or so, I try and open up the c-file, then bring my rook across. Once the king is safely castled and all my pieces are in decent positions, then I might push the f-pawn and try to break his central pawn chain. Something along those lines ;)

Problem with the pawn on d5 guarding e4 is it won't. If white ever decided to play cxd5 if I didn't, I would play Nxd5, and the square would no longer be covered.

I'm hoping to castle queenside most likely and have a string knight on d5. there is nothing wrong with taking with the pawn but the whole point of 7.Ne7 is to take back with the horse.

Oh I'll do that too if it's allowed. Just not in this variation. This is the variation of the caro that got me to stop playing h4 for a while until starting it again a bit.

That's a possibility too but only after the tension is broken in the center. I want an open d file to put pressure on his weakened centre.

Dxc4 is the second most common continuation and after Bg5 my best move was 9..f6!

The reason I didn't play Qb6 is because I wanted the b6 square for my d7 knight
