Exploring the Sicilian with black: Grand Prix attack part 1

One of the most popular openings is the Sicilian Defence.  There are many variations of the Sicilian.  One of them is the Grand Prix attack.

The Grand Prix starts out with 1.e4 c4, like every sicilian.  Now, white has two choices to play here.  They are 2.f4 and 2.Nc3.  We will start out with 2.f4 first/

.Black will now play 2...g6 and then 3.Nf3 Bg7.  4.Nc3 will now be white's move.  If white chooses to move to Bc4 or c3, then black will get a slight advantage.  The moves for Bc4 are 4...e6 5.d4 and the great move 5...d5.  Now black has to play 6.Bd5+ in order to not give black the strong squares in the center.  Black responds with Bd7.

Remember that if white plays Bg4 or c3, then white would have a slight advantage?  Well, we just discovered how to respond to Bg4 and we now will learn how to play to c3.  White wishes to control the center and so black would stop that with 4..Nc6.  Then 5.d4 cxd4 and 6.cxd4 and finally 6..d5!

If 7.e5 then black easily plays 7.Bg4.

Now, lets go back even further to move #2.  White had two choices, f4 and Nc3.  If white played 2.Nc3, then now Black will play g6 3.f4 Bg7 4.Nf3 Nc6.  Again, in this position, white can play Bc4 or Bb5.  We will go deeper into the Grand Prix next time in part 2 and we will start with the possibilities of Bc4 and Bb5.  Finally next time, we will finish the Grand Prix attack.

Be sure to read the Exploring the Sicilian with black series next time!

I'd say 2. nc6 is muhc more common for black than g6 vs either move (especially vs nc3).

Either way, I can't say I know much about this variation.

2. f4 simply fumbles the opening and gives white's advantage away in the form of 2...d5!

Also, the Grand Prix attack isn't at all the best anti-sicilian white could choose, and the system doesn't offer much so long as black has a clue what he's doing

I chose the alapin and they play 2...g6 and lose the center to 3.d4!

It's actually kind of funny, because though 2...d5 is suppoed to refute 2 f4, now I'm not sure if I'm remembering correctly, but I think in MCO it actually came out as better for white! Perhaps 2 f4 is not worse than 2 Nc3, just more provocative.

modern grand prix starts after 1.e4 c5 2.Nc3 Nc6 3.f4!
