gambit

I recently played a game with a friend online. He mistakenly stumbled on this gambit, he even named it himself, and wanted me to go along with the first 2 moves so he can show me, whether or not I accepted it. Actually, as white, he won the game. Is there an actual name for this gambit on the first 2 or three moves? I accepted the gambit. He had a space advantage on his queen side.

Uhm...WTF?????

First off, the whole opening is utter crap, and your 8th move was pathetic (just play 8...d6, your position is 10 times better than White's), going from clear advantage for Black to equal, but that aside, why on earth did you resign this equal position?  Because you lost castling rights?  Castling ain't the end all, be all of chess.  I've won many games without castling!

Uhm, "WTF" , but I didn't resign. In a real game, I would of played differently.

According to your post, you did.  Diagram says "1-0" and you indicated you had Black.

Not sure where it says I resign, but it is wrong or a mistake. I didn't post the whole game, just the first 10 moves, just wanted to see what others thought about that gambit.

Can you explain the point of the gambit?

Looks to me like more of a pawn blunder than a gambit. Gambits are supposed to achieve a development lead.

Yes, he said there is merit. I was thinking maybe he just wanted to gain space on his queen side for the sake of development.

The fact that it says "1-0" up top indicates that Black had resigned.  That's the meaning of "1-0".  If Black didn't resign, you should select "No Result", which is actually the default choice.  There are 4 radio buttons, Black Resigns (1-0), White Resigns (0-1), Draw (1/2-1/2), and No Result.

OK, thanks I will remember that next time

I would have assumed white wants to play d4 and at least get a decent centre out of it. b4 doesn't do much else IMO. Instead a time wasting knight forray.

I would also never be stupid enough to play 1...e6 as Black against 1.e3.  If White is going to do something dumb like that, take the center with 1...e5 or 1...d5.

I agree. Normally I would fight for the center.

The same as any gambit: to look like a dashing player at the cost of losing the game ^_^

While I think short pawn move copying is lame (such as 1...e6 against 1.e3) I wouldn't go so far as to call it dumb.  White wants to keep his options open, and black is doing the same thing.  It's kind of the same concept as 1.Nf3,Nf6

1.e3 has a kind of wait and seeish feel where black should be careful not to overextend. 1.e3,e5 2.d4,e4 3.c4 is one possible way black can go wrong.  I don't play 1.e3 myself and would personally take on d4 (until I find something better, not that 1.e3 is common enough to worry about), and after 3.exd5,Nf6 black is ahead in development.  Maybe not white's best opening but there is some surprize value.

i think u r amazed only because after all those takes u have open spaces ! which is not usual so fast in the game !! but if u asked why it is not so usual in the games to have such fast free space ! that is becasue it means u r skipping opening and middle game ( and obviously of the chess game itself ) and after few more sacrificing of minor pieces u r hitting the end game !

becoming better in chess is becoming more skillful in handling the opening and crowded middle game !

this opening could be used to diverse opponent after few games of routine openings ! but it it is sure restricting ur own pieces from having any advantage !

Black did not resign. It was checkmate.

The king can move 1 square in any direction.

Chess is for fun and to be enjoyable. We should stop putting others down, too many people do that.

I played the game, I know it was checkmate. Cool
