Sort:
sam_chessgenius

after (Scotch gambit) 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3. d4 cxd4 4. Bc4... I did not find best move. if i play 4. Nf6 then it turns into 5.e5 d5 6. Bb5 Ne4 7.Nxd4 Bd7 8. Bxc6 bxc6 9.0-0 bc5,,,this is so boring for black, cuz then"e and f" pawn of white is headache for black, i dont want to go in this line, so i have option of 4.....Bc5 , Bb4, d6 alll are absolutely passive and bad, i checked all. now what to do? so i decided 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3. d4 Nxd4, but still its passive, i m confused what to do ?!!!!

play something other than e5 if you are not prepared to face the scotch. Like e6 or c6 or ...

TonyH

datadumps just  confuse people even more. errr e6 and c6 have their own problems there is nothing wrong with ....e5

Ok Lesson 1) black is playing a solid game with ...e5 the pawn structures sta balanced so things are not super crazy

Black is trying to equalize generally b playing ....d5 as soon as possible.

if you want dynamic play which sometimes leads to pawn imbalanced centers in the mainlines but white has several systems that try to keep the pawn structure balanced and milk his first move advantage. (Bb5 and c3 systems or closed systems which are just a cop out at the amateur level)

The scotch isnt too scary for black if they know what to do and it teaches a lot learning it as well. the systems you mentioned above arent passive at all and white has to know what he  is doing or gets crushed.
My advice is get ahold of Marin's books on e5 and the 2nd one on the spanish even if its just to educate yourself. My friend who is 2250 FIDE crushed another master using the line in that book (we studied it a bit for someone else but he didnt play it so saved it and this guy walked into it, he quit the scotch gambit after that)

I like to think of it as your playing black but so often players at the amature level make so many mistakes inthe opening you can almost act like your playing with teh first move after about move 10.

i am very much prepared in all line as e5, ruy lopez, guico piano, against 2. f4, all lines, but only scotch makes me confused still, but now i decided to play surprise move that played by some GM , including 2720 rated mamedyrov, i will try 4..... g6, whats your opinion on this??? please

moonnie

You could try 4 ... Bc5 instead of Nf6.

After 5 c3 - Nf6 6 cxd4 Bb4+ you are in the italian game. Ofourse white can still choose the boring 7. Bd2 but more often they play the exciting 7. Nc3 leading to the Max Lange attack .. a pretty exciting game but you need to know your theory as black or you will get killed

Also you will have to accept that in every opening white can choose boring lines. See it as a way to outplay your opponent in an equal position instead of boredom.

I just found out how to insert board .. yay

after (Scotch gambit) 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3. d4 cxd4 4.

I am reasonably certain this is a typo.  What you meant to type is 3...exd4.  A minor point.

The major point is that there are 2 Chess Opening Theories.  That is what lies at the root of your problem.  The 2 Chess Opening Theories are:

1. Classical Chess Opening Theory:  Control the center by occupying it with your pawns and pieces.

2. Hypermodern Chess Opening Theory: Control the center by using the power of your pawns and pieces to control the center.  With this method you do not create targets in the center for your opponent to attack.

The Scotch Gambit is both White and Black employing Classical Chess Opening Theory to control the center.

My suggestion is when White plays 1.e4 do not play 1...e5.  Play instead 1...c5 the Sicilian, 1...Nf6 Alekhine's, 1...d6 Veresov's, 1...g6 Hyper Accelerated Sicilian Dragon, 1...b6 Queen's Indian, Bogo Indian, Benoni, Catalan, 1...e6 and after 2.d4, play 2...c5 or 2...g6 or 2...Nf6 depending on which of the above mentioned openings you wish to play by transposition.  The idea is to employ Hypermodern to control the center, while White is playing Classical to control the center.  It turns into very exciting struggles of Hypermodern theory vs. Classical theory.

In other words, by treating the opening assymetrically with the Hypermodern as Black, you escape the major downfall of the Classical which almost always locks you into treating the opening symmetrically.  This makes it very difficult to wrest the intiative of the first move from White.  Treating the opening assymetrically creates dynamic and static advantages and disadvantages that make the position doubledged, providing opportunities for the stronger chessplayer to create winning, or equal yet precariously unbalanced positions, that will enable him/her to prevail.

There is nothing wrong with 1. e5. The top 3 of the world (Carlsen, Aronian and Kramnik) all play e5.They often seem to win too.

It is more a question of style and personality. What kind of positions do you like. Do you personally like a strong center (believe me it is easier to play) or do you like to give your oponent the center and counter when 1 mistake can gets the oponents center rolling. Like in most cases it is risk vs reward

You are right moonie.  As with anything in life, treating the opening asymetrically is double edged.  But, if you do not want to be locked in to symmetry, and want to fight White for the intiative of the first move, there are risks and rewards.  The main downfall to the Hypermodern is that your opponent is always searching the position for moves with advantages that outweigh disaadvantages in order to gain time or space.  As you know along with material both of these are the 3 advantages in space.  So, yes as an advocate of the Hypermodern you have to be keenly aware of dynamic advantages in time, and static advantages in space. Your opponent will be constantly seeking to analyze and find candidate moves in the position and exploit if possible tactically/strategically those advantages (time/space) that outweigh the disadvantages.  In other words, if you want to be a "professional gunslinger" you must always walk into the bar, with your back against the wall and your hands on your 6-shooters.

And, just as a bonus it sure makes for exciting chess!!

blake78613

What do you play against the Giuoco Piano?  If you play the Two Knights Defense, than play 4...Nc6 which is a direct transposition.  If you play 3...Bc5 then play 4...Bc5 against the Scotch gambit, and it should transpose.
