Smith Morra Gambit - Danish Variation

Sort:
DarthMusashi

Recently I started playing the Danish Gambit (1.e4 e5 2.d4 exd4 3.c3 dxc3 4.Bc4 cxb2 5.Bxb2) and won some online games on the ICC (Internet Chess Club). But I also play the Smith Morra Gambit (1.e4 c5 2.d4 cxd4 c3) but I was wondering if a Danish Gambit type of line can be played in the Smith Morra Gambit against the Sicilian Defense?  I compiled a number of games with this Danish type of line with the moves 1.e4 c5 2.d4 cxd4 3.c3 dxc3 4.Bc4 cxb2 5.Bxb2.

And listed below are some sample games with this opening line. I was really fascinated by the kind of tactics being played in some of these games. See sample games below:

It's annoying and I remember having trouble with it back when I played the accepted because of the tactical tricks.

However with black still having the option to play e6 the compensation compared to the danish would be almost non existent I imagine. After all the weak f7 square is a big part of the danish strategy.

Fear_ItseIf

Ok, true. But it was mostly 3 minute games I played it in and im very poor at blitz.

Listed below is a recent Smith Morra Gambit Danish Var that I won against

IM pfren

IM Ling Fong is a chess engine on ICC and is quite strong. I believe she
could beat you easily with any opening you play. That game is a valid game at game 15 minutes.

I've always wondered what the minimum time was for a valid game. Thanks for clearing that up.

Duck_Of_Doom

So what does white actually have for whole 2 pawns? Not much really.
Pressure is neutralized, bishops are just sitting there idly, king can't castle, knight is on the rim and hanging..
It's hard to see how to form some kind of attack from here.

I tried many other variations, but believe it or not, they all end up similarly, and even worse, because Chessmaster will play very aggresively to chop down pieces off the board and I can't really stop him.

Chasing of the bishop will happen no matter what sequence, and you can't prevent knight coming to the center of the board.

If you think you have an answer to Qe7 and c6, please, suggest it and I'll run it with him, because I like this opening and want to play it, but I simply don't think it can hold up to precise play.

Thank you

TheGreatOogieBoogie

I beat a 1700 USCF as black against this at a club.  That should tell you just how bad it is.  Why not just go for the proper Smith-Morra?  Of course I played against the Danish line before discovering I could transpose with 1.e4,c5 2.d4,cxd4 3.c3,Nf6! into an Alapin.

Duck_Of_Doom

pfren, the  whole idea of attaking the bishop with b pawn is that black's light square bishop sits on very uncomfortable square preventing white from castling, after annoying him with constant pawn advance attacking its pieces.

Do you have an answer as white with moves my engine suggests? (b5 instead of d5)

I would be very interested in hearing your response, and putting it in front of the engine, to see what it says about it.

I  am not trying to act smart, with my rating and all, just referencing engine, which I consider more knowledgeable than you and me, no offense.

Btw, I inputed Nf3 instead of other knight moving first, trying to get the castle out of the way early, and it would seem that this reversed order doesn't matter too much.

One of the following things will happen by force - lightquare bishop ehxchange, inability to castle an b pawn push.

Thank you

JuergenWerner
