Strange French/Sicilian Defenses

Sort:
bfoleyfire

To tell you the truth, I don't face a lot of opening weaknesses when it comes to 1. e4. However, when my opponent plays a French and plays 2...c5, what should I do? Of course, it would be natural to transpose into a Sicilian with 3. Nf3, but what happens if my opponent plays 3...Nc6? (That question mark is for the sentence, not for the annotation.) I mean, I gain a tempo, but what move should I make?

Thanks!

You can transpose to Sicilian via Nf3 or c3, or play French Advance after c3 d5 e5. Or play d5 and get Franco-Benoni.

3.Nf3 Nc6 is kind of bad because of d5. Black should take on d4 first and only then play Nc6. Then you'll get Taimanov or Maroczy via 5.Nb5 d6 6.c4.

csalami

d5 is the best move (you want to keep your center) but if you don't mind playing a sicilian defense you could play Nf3 or c3.

TwoMove

Worrying about 3Nf3 Nc6 shows frankly you are not at a level need to be considered about openings at all.

SmorphSmurf

I would play Nf3. Black won't play Nc6, it's too passive.

SmorphSmurf

d5 is better anyway.

acountisasgoodasclos

this is called the frankie :) also hahahaha HE TRICKED YOU WITH 2.C5  you fool for playing d4 :P

adumbrate

d5 and white has advantage

acountisasgoodasclos

lol

acountisasgoodasclos

that is incorrect all openings are draws chess is a draw

bfoleyfire

Okay, I see. I have been playing d5, actually...I just need more practice winning in that line, I guess.

acountisasgoodasclos

@vfoleyfire what do you do vs 1.e4 c5?

bfoleyfire

I play an Open Sicilian, for example 2. Nf3 d6 3. d4 cxd4 4. Nxe4 Nf6 5. Nc3, etc. That's just what I'm most comfortable with...I have played Anti-Sicilian lines, but I've never been a huge fan. :)

bfoleyfire

What do you play?

acountisasgoodasclos

what do you do vs 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 e6?

acountisasgoodasclos

also does not matter what I play just what you play :)

bfoleyfire

Haha, okay! I play a similar setup for 2...e6, pushing d4 on the third move.

acountisasgoodasclos

then after 1.e4 e6 2.d4 c5 you should play 3.Nf3 because first of all

The sicilian e6 systems are hard to play if you don't know what you are doing.

Two I have not met anyone who plays 2.....c5 and knows alot of opening theory.

Three you don't have to learn a new line that you'll get in 0.1% of your games.

bfoleyfire

Right, yeah.

SmorphSmurf

bfoleyfire, most people will play 1... c5 and then 2... e6, but usually not 1...e6 and then 2... c5.
