I did find though that there are more defenses to prepare for when playing 1 d4 than 1 e4 .

Fact.

The scary downside to swicthing to d4 is one might be tempted to go all the way down the rabbit hole that is 1.c4

I've heard of some people actually BECOMING the rabbit hole with 1.Nf3

I love 1.d4 d5 2.c4 dxc4 3. e3 b5 4. a4 c6 5. Qf3 ...

'Yes' If he was anything like me.

Although I didn't know it at the time, I played the Scotch 99% of my games. I'm really glad I strated using 1. d4 a few months ago.

Thinking of 5.axb5 cxb5 6.Qf3?    If not, it's definitely an improvement.

if you are looking for an attacking repertoire, this could be a good starting point..

i think most of the lines fit well with an 1.e4 player. try out the suggested openings in blitz and see what lines you like the most..

Caveat: most of the lines need serious work on your own. i am an e4 player myself, thinking to learn more of c4,d4 openings for a while, but never manage enough time to completely switch to d4. ideally i would love to play both equally well, but i feel handling 1.d4 is often more subtle.

Too often in e4 openings central pawns get traded, and soon too much material is liquidated to press for attacking chess. The advantage of d4 is it leads to many more semi-open and asymmetric positions, where there are plenty of winning chances and more material is kept on the board for longer. I support your decision and hope you will have more fun and exciting games.

The youtube material by chessexplained looks good. Is that available in book and/or PGN or online format? What does he have for a repertoire as Black?

I think a lot of his ideas are from the Kaufman repertoire, IIRC.  His videos for black only encompass 1...e5 to 1.e4 based on the Bc5 move, unless he's added stuff over the past months.

I think the series predates the (newer) Kaufman rep.

Yeah I checked his channel and you're right...I think I was recalling the kaufman repertoire because he has that book review on his channel as well.

Kaufman's newer book made a bunch of changes to the rep. 1.d4 now instead of 1.e4.

For Black, Semi-Slav is no longer used. Gruenfeld has been added. I have both books.

There are many other changes...
