Hey guys, I recently got 2nd in the CYCC (Canadian Youth Chess Championships), and I'm going to be going to the World's.
My repertoire is usually very dynamic, either very sound or very crazy. But I need a good back-up opening to play so my opponents can't prepare for me.
I really need suggestions! I have a Fritz 11 opening book, so I can look up lines, if anyone can recommend some BOOKS, I would definitely appreciate it!
I'm looking for general openings and then into specific lines, thanks!
Mr3O
hmmmmmm if you want something opponents wont prepare for try the borg defense but if you want something that might work but is still under work here it is 1 e4 e6 2. d4 d5 3. e5 bd7 4. nf3 b5

Awesome job getting into the World Youth! If you want a crazy line in the French (beware requires lots of study) then check out my recent thread about 5.Qg4 in the Winawer.
Good Luck
if you want completely sane try the four kinghts as black work for a draw

Well, first of all, great job getting there!
Any opening within reason can become a reliable weapon for you. You might consider just continuing playing what you always do. Turn your existing openings into unbeatable monsters.
I don't think the people you will be playing will be poring over your historical games plotting ingenious counters. But if you really are keen for tips then how about the French or Caro-Kann for black if you usually answer e4 with e5. If you always play e4 yourself currently, perhaps learn the queens gambit, english opening or catalan as a surprise weapon.
And yes, to the previous commenter, the four knights is pretty stodgy and draw producing (at top level mind you and why would you want to go for a draw?) but who, as white plays 3. Nc3? I've probably seen it about twice in my whole life.
Thanks for commenting guys.
Mr30 - I actually know a lot of theory for the four knights, but I don't like going into a Ruy Lopez where after I play Nc6, they play Bb5 and c3 etc.
Padman - I can play the Caro, Scandinavian, King's pawn, but I usually don't play Sicilian. I would like to know some good, unused lines as black for the French though.
CrazyMofo - Lol thanks, Qg4 is main line in the winawer, but it'd take me a little while to study the theory on that.
