Today's Site Outage...

Today a change in how Microsoft Bing’s web indexing spider reads our web pages resulted in Bing repeatedly hitting some new pages on our site, which were not able to withstand the load.
 
Unfortunately, that causes a cascade of database problems which we jumped on as quickly as possible to fix, but it turned out to be a very tricky issue which touched a lot of our site.

funny deeper insight here: 

bing.com basically started searching chess.com's search box for all of these crazy, weird, random text strings. i kid you not - the search that first brough chess.com to it's knees was bing.com searching chess.com's search engine for "wilshire sex cat". whaaaaa....??? anyway, we had a good laugh about that (after we had a good long cry about the problems).
