A perfect Day 3 at the US Open

Playing in the 6-day schedule, my 4th and 5th rounds were on Thursday, August 1st.  The first game I think is my best thus far, taking advantage of a positional mistake that many amateurs seem to make in the Slav Defense, and the second game I actually trapped by opponent's Queen and his position swiftly fell apart after having the give up the Queen for Rook and Knight.

I really like the first game!

The first is definitely better than the second.  The only thing I hated about the first game was the fact that I had spent 10, 3, 5, 10, 12, and 10 minutes on moves 19 thru 24, taking me down from 71 minutes to 21 minutes to make it to move 40 as it was that type of position that you feel like you "must win", and would probably be even more irritated if you drew or lost that than if you were to simply get blown out from the beginning.  It was at move 32 that I basically had everything figured out in terms of getting to the better ending, and move 42 that I ultimately figured out the win, and that if he didn't fall for coming down to grab pawns, I can just ride the Rook, King, and b-pawn up the board that would eventually force Black to cave in, most likely that being in the form of eventually giving up the b-pawn in return for 2 or more pawns on the Kingside.

Good wins in both games, and good luck with the rest of the rounds.  But not bad for a Mets fan.  Wink

The round 4 game looked real nice.  I like the pressure.  I've saved the Queen trap in my trapped piece puzzle file for students.  Nice work.  I'm looking forward to seeing the rest of your games.
