Awesome! Now I know not to get into that endgame with you! ;)
I DID IT! Mate with N+B under time pressure in a tournament ...
Well done. An impressive feat. I use Deletang's triangle method to do the same job. From the start position it's mate in 30 moves if you do it 'the right way'. Using the triangle method, which I find easy to understand, it took me 42 moves, but I'm sure all the way
That's wild, Crafty - I'd looked at the method, but decided the "W" looked simpler and I'd already learnt the principle of it, so I stuck with it. Those N moves are something else ... have you ever had it in a game yet?
PS I just looked at it in more detail - interesting is that on move 18 you're in the ideal starting position for the W method, which then leads to mate in 7 fewer moves with best play by Black. But as you say, the only thing that counts is that you're sure all the way!
According to GM de la Villa, 19% of these endgames end in a draw in a database of 4000000 games, and some of the draws were in games played by GM's.
Well done!
We must admit your opponent didn't have a clue he should try to keep his king in a wrong corner but it's still very cool.

If he's tried that it would have been easier, because that's what the engine always does! :)
Would you guys mind explaining the difference with the W vs Triangle methods? I'm sure I could look it up but I find this conversation very interesting. Congrats by the way on another great chess achievement!
If you were to spend the time you wasted on learning B+N on some practical chess, then not only would you have gotten better results in many of your other games, but you would have even beaten this particular opponent much eariler in the game.
I had this ending in a tournament game 1 time. I dont know, dont study it, and wont study it. I offered him a draw, and onviously he accepted. While going over the game, he asked me if i know the mate? I said No...thats why i offered you the draw. He laughs, and said its good to see someone else besides myself that doesnt know it.
10 min Rapid tournament - Jeremy Silman leaves this mate out of his endgame book with the reasoning that it so seldom occurs that you're better off practising other techniques. I practised it nonetheless, and finally it's paid off!
My longest game to date here (90 moves), and I came 2nd ... I just broke open a bottle of wine to celebrate!
