so how many hours a day do you have to play chess in order for you to consider yourself addicted in your opinion? i'm starting to stretch it pretty far currently. just curious about other's opinions.

I started playing chess 6-7 months ago.I used to play chess when i was a child, but then my education took the 1-st place and i had no time for doing this. So,as I started playing again,I got addicted ate the very first month.I love this game and I think even for a beginner, who has never played chess, its tremendously interesting to get involved in its mystery.Wink

Addiction may be diagnosed in various degrees- first a compelling interest in reply  to moves makes u check your fate-  compulsion increases to harmful extent when u start to miss trains and appointments  in consequence of playing "just one more move"-most harmfull if u begin to   neglect chores and allow  the deadly syndrome of  neglecting all other matters in favour of playing the game !

What's wrong  about addiction to chess ? Most people have a job what takes on average 8 hrs + a day ,is that an addiction too ?

kco

Well for me I've been playing for three months now, playing 6-8 hrs/day sometime more. I really enjoy this website and the game also meeting some great peoples out there. Before I used to watch tv alot now chess has taken over, yes I have neglected a few thing here a home also what worse is I have another problem I am a procrastinator !!

Chessroshi

I've tried to quit chess about as many times as I've bought a chess book..... so around 87 times. I think it's stalking me...

currently i am playing for hours a day (when i have the time) but my "chores" are starting to fall behind ;)

Addiction means at least 3 hours per day. Meaning I'm addicted x3.

rollingpawns

Addiction means not only playing online until 3am, but also if the following takes a good part of your day: watching GM games live, reading about chess ( from openings to gossip ), posting, analyzing, etc.

When you start dreaming it

MsCloyescapade

Ive been waiting all day for my opponents to move instead of doing my term paper. I would say I am either addicted... or longer wish to be a business major... either way.

I agree when you think about chess when you go to bed and in your dreams.. thats when you know your hooked.. But I think once you get hooked you start to play better at least I do.. The more you win the more addicting the game gets.. to see your opponents moves and to formulate ways to destroty their plan.. ahh its sheer bliss... playing perfect games agianst players 400+ higher than you.. dictating the game and not being dictated.. thats the addiction i feel

There's gotta be a move I missed. Let's play another game.

When you cant wait 3 minutes for your opponent to move and you open seek, your a chaddict. When you walk on your tile floor like a knight, your a chaddict. When the people you play with the most live in the opposit time zone from you, your both chaddicts.

Interesting thread ! Addicts ,chaddikts and procrastnicts-all need abstractions  as substractions from  additions.... er...uhm.. any distractions, reactions or detractions ?

Addicted yes, started playing Chess back in January after not playing it for 20 years. I tend to check (sic) my games here every few hours. When I find I dont have any moves to make in games I check the tactics trainer, daily puzzle and forums. I think I probably spend about 3-4 hours a day on chess.

Oh not forgetting I am playing Chessmaster on my Nintendo DS when I travel to work on the train. Smile

I find it a good way to unwind and freeup your mind.

Chaddict, wat an awesome word (falls asleep dreaming about chess.)

Looking at the clock and hoping that work will be over soon so I can play chess.  Going at home or to a computer shop and play for 3 to 4 hours then before going to work the next day play for an hour or two.  and if there is no work currently pending go straight to the company's public computer to play chess.  I rather play chess for hours than go out with friends and attend parties.  Yeah, I think I am addicted to chess!

my girlfriend didn't stand a chance against me on the board... then i showed her chess.com. now she plays livechess more than i'm comfortable with... especially since she's beating me now.
