Chess as a combat sport!

If every tournament player was forced to practice fighting in a regular base, then wouldn't official games turn out to be much more interesting?

Well, chess is a really dynamic game, but how many players actually realise that fact?

Fear_ItseIf

i really wish chess boxing was more popular, thatd increase its popularality, even more so if it was a more interesting form o martial arts.

Stretching it a tad!...can't remember the last time I finished a game of chess with a bloody nose and a broken rib.

I want CUFC: chess ultimate fighting championship. The first bout will have to be:

Ms JUdit Polgar v's Mr Victor "the misogynist" Korchnoi.

everybody has a plan.. untill they get punched in the face

Fear_ItseIf

Whats more i believe players should be allowed to use the pieces as weapons!

its all fun and games till someone takes a bishop to the eye

My dad did fencing, and he views the chess board almost like a fencing strip.

And as for chess having common things with a martial art, he is actually correct, as even though martial arts aren't turn-based world class players can get a tempo like in chess and can even make the sport ultimately turn-based

And dimis there are similar strategies that exist between fencing and chess, like the gaining of a tempo, forcing your opposition to cover lines and exploiting the shift in the opponents defences and also the jostling for position to ultimately defeat your opponent.

Chess is a game between 2 humans, other games are games between humans as well, ofcourse there are similarities. But I guarantee you that punching someone in the nose is quite different than checkmating someone.

Chess is a game where you want to beat your opponent. Grandmasters do this by getting up into a better position than their opponent and then laying down an undeniable assault. This also seems to occur in other martial art sports. To you guys than say "Can't remember being punched in the nose while playing chess, you have my point all wrong and I've set this post out to correct your perception of my point. My point is you play and win the sport in fundamentally the same way; through use of strategies, stratagems, position and forceful tactics.

@soox: well that covers pretty much every sport

The point of every game and/or sport is to beat your opponent.

off hand i can't think of any G.M. (passed or present) i would consider TOUGH  combat wise------if u mean handle chess pressure, sure.I'm fairly sure in a war zone fox hole i've a good idea the type of person needed and a G.M.  is not my first choice....sorry !

sooxtown123

Not stratagem and tactics. They only occur in chess and martial arts.

sooxtown123

The gm could plan a stratagy to use to get out, and a war isn't all about strength either, although war is mainly physical, but it's gone completely over your head that we're not trying to point out the physical things in martial arts and chess, but this about the tactics and stratagem to win.

sooxtown123

Should say strategies; damn auto-type XD
