Chess Beginner Problems

Heys guys,

im new to chess world. I mean, i would always play for fun, but never in tournaments or even had a coach, just something to past the time and keep my brain working when i was a kid. Now, i do want to step up my game. Really badly.

Currently inspired to play again thanks to my 10 year old little cousin, whose quite a bit of contender in his district school board (always in the top 5). Now i know it is going to be a long process, but as long as i got a solid plan laid out   to help me improve myself, and my game, I'll be alright. So to my main question:

what do you guys, reccomend to do in order for me to "up my game" and get playing again? Books, methods, im open to anything.

Thank you.

Do tactics daily and maybe Chess Mentor but since you are a basic member you can only do three tactics a day only ten Chess Mentor lessons total.(Unless you upgrade).

A tactics server I would recommend is emerald.net. You can sign in as guest for free or you can register for free.

In the Video Lessons under the heading Learn (on this website) there is a great set of 5 short videos of superb basic instruction in all areas of the game. It's called "Everything you need to know to start playing chess". Here's the link to the first of the five, you could probably skip to the second.

The book "Chess For Dummies". I have read it at least three times.
