Hello everybody, I'm curious what your favorite time controlls are.

Please don't leave rude comments, I'm now deleting rude comments,

I've had enough rudeness, so now I can get rid of that!

I didn't know you could delete comments if you started the thread, is that true?

I dont believe you can. Try deleting some in a thread you started.

kco

You can only delete other people's comments on your own Blog.

Yea, we dare you to delete our posts. Btw, for some strange reason, I like 7min per game setting. If we are talking about live chess.

I like game in 1 through 5 but then I skip and play 10 or 15 minute games.  20/10 or G/30 is probably the longest I'd be willing to play that isn't a tournament game -- but you'd have to be someone I was interested in playing because that's a lot of time for a pickup game Smile

For tournament games I would want multiple time controls (as I'm almost always short on time) but no luck there.  I've played a few G/90 +30 and they're ok, if I had my way would probably be more comfortable with at least G/120 +30

BTW Reb and kco, I'm waiting and watching Surprised (I couldn't delete)

Time controls, interesting subject. When I started the popular control was 40 moves in 90 min and then there was a secondary time control of like 20 moves in 30 min and after that my memory gets fuzzy and I dont remember if there was a third control or not. I do remember we had adjournments back then as well. Any oldtimers here that can help my memory ?  My first rated event was in 1973.

In a separate thread of questionable use, (the are computers smarter thread) I test to see how many moves a game window can hold here.  Seems like just over 5000.  This may have the unexpected benefit of hindering people form posting further by making the script take a long time.

I like increments. Currently 4 minutes plus 4 seconds per move is my favourite, mainly because it is one of the offered 'presets'. I think there are many people who are not used to increments, and who may not notice that they are playing, say 5 mins + 3 secs and not just 5 mins; the rather unusual 4 mins may alert them. It would be nice if the clock display made it obvious that there is an increment.

Why increments? Because I don't like time scrambles, but I don't want to commit to 10 or 15 minutes, and maybe have to wait if my opponent is losing and decided to run down his clock. A 4 min + 4 sec game could be as long as a 10 or 15 one, or even longer, but I find that very rarely happens.

ringwraith10

1 minute, 3-6 minutes

8 is the longest i would commit

I prefer 3 0 for online blitz, but will play 4 0 and 5 0 on occasion.

or bullet, I prefer 1 0, but will play 1 1 and 2 0. Other time controls are not bullet IMHO.

I like 15 0 for standard, but do not play it much here. It is too difficult to get past my suspicions that computer abuse is taking place at the other end when the time controls are not frantic. On Playchess, however, I prefer 16 0 to 16 3 and also 20 0 to 20 2.

If I want longer time controls than the above, I'll go to chess club. There are two that meet weekly in my area:

Spokane Chess Club

Coeur d' Alene Chess Club

For OTB play, I most often play game/2 (two hours: although usually that means 115 minutes with a five second time delay). Occasionally, I'll play an event with 40/2 SD/60. These latter are long games.

I prefer game/29 for quick events. At game/30, the USCF implements dual rating which means that I put my standard rating on the line with the reckless stuff I play in fast chess. I don't like that.
