Chess.com ratings

Having taken to chess again after 30 years, and boy do I have the bug now, you'll have to excuse what could be a daft question. Are the chess.com ratings recognised outside of this web site? Do they mean anything to the wider chess community? Is there a world wide rating standard?

not that I know of. probably not. many people cheat by having 2 people on one computer to gain more points. sooooo, no to all questions

Good point. Thanks.

No, they mean nothing outside of chess.com (and due to cheating being widespread, they mean very little even here). In most cases they are likely inflated by 200-300+ points when compared to real world OTB (over-the-board) ratings.

Just enjoy playing and don't worry about ratings. When you decide to join a club or play in an OTB event, then you can start worrying Wink

They're a good reflection of relative strength here, but don't have a direct link to external ratings. There is no accurate formula you could apply to relate chess.com ratings to FIDE ratings, for example.

The only feasible way, that it seems you could make a relative comparison, would be to take games that a player, who is rated here and in either FIDE/USCF and check to make sure there was no funny business here in particular. Then do a comparison of the ratings that player has here and there. The more players you could do this with the better. You could probably use a similar a set of variable considerations that are used to figure your rating change here, to get a better idea of how accurate they are in comparison. I seriously doubt it will ever happen. There would be too much time and money involved to find answer, with no practicle need for it.
