Discrimination in chess M/F?

Sort:
Mulibert

Hey, please help us in our discussion.

My gf said it is unfair that women cant compete in the wm tournament because it is divided in m/f. She thinks that women should have the chance to take part in it and to show her skills.

Well, its true that a woman can compete in mans competitions but man cant in women competitions but tbh I never heard a women taking part in the pre-wm tournamants.

I found out that the best Women ELO was about 2740 which would be place 40 on the currents ELO list.

Sport is normaly divided in gender but in chess there are no physical components. Therefore chances could be seen as equal... What do you think?

Greetings :)

No offense, but women suck as chess. Suck really really hard.

Even top chess player women such as Hou Yifan or Polgar sisters are arguebly not as strong as anyone from top30 men.

Discrimination in chess is a real thing. Letting women participicate in men competition, but not reverse is just showing that women are not as good as men in chess.

Just wanted to bring up the fact that a woman's rating is meaningless if she plays in events reserved to women. The ELO measures relative performance, not absolute, so if a woman competes in a pool of bad players then she's going to be overrated (compared to the men).

How to forget when the women's chess champion couldn't do the B+N mate. With 8 mins on the clock.

No point in entering a competition if you have no chance of winning applies to men and women.

I could say pretty the same thing about 95% of male chess players, no offense.

To be the best you have to play the best, and unfortunately all the WGM save polar mostly play each other cause they're afraid. When the girls are ready they'll get there.

In some English congresses women get a discounted entrance fee. Misguided social engineering IMHO. There's no reason at all why men/women participation has to be: a) Absolutely 50/50 or b) proportionate according to the whims of political correctness...The discounted entrance fee also suggests that women may be more tight fisted than men.

I know this is not a new topic but all discussion I found were not satisfying because its the old argument: "i dont let you because I protect you"...

I think women are totally underestimated. Last game Carlsen won against Hou but this was not that easy... Here, have a look:

Just because they have probably not a chance in winning doesnt mean that you have the right to suspend female players...

Posts like these just show how afraid men are of women. Grow up.

first of all, this is a VERY repetitive thread.  we talk about this OVER and OVER and OVER again.  so you'll forgive us, long time forum guys, from feeling a certain like "here we go again."

also, women DO participate in mixed tournaments.  there's no such thing as a "mens only" tournament.  in fact, MOST tournaments are open to both men and women all the way to the best tournaments in the world...

of course, most of the highest tournaments are by "Invite-only" and most women aren't able to compete with the best chess players in the world.

As the path to high-level chess is open to women and men- eventually a women will again rise to the highest level.

Judit polgar made the top ten.  eventually someone else will too.  watch the chinese- LOTS of talent in china.  and china is still working on building skills/enthusiasm in Western chess... as their chess game is a little different.

if Hou doesn't go much higher. I've still appreciated her strength; she still rapidly improved past all the world competitive women chess player- and she was ambitious entering into many of "open" tournaments and not just playing in women tournaments.

Judit Polgar was rated well over 2700 and qualified for the Candidates, it's hard to argue that she wasn't top 30. Hou Yifan can't really compete with the male super GMs yet but may still get up closer to that level.

nobody stops women from competing in anything. the reason women choose to play other women in female only tournaments is to increase their chance of winning. there are some women that are fine with entering the coed tournaments such as polgar and nobody held them back...they are simply rare.

The reason most women start playing in female-only events is because they are too uncomfortable playing a vast majority of men that mistreat them in one of two ways:  either by being dismissive and assuming they cannot be good players (i.e. inferior), or by fawning over them and disregarding everything but their appearance (i.e. "I want to have sex, and you are my current target").

Both of these outlooks are repugnant, and annoying, and repeated exposure over the long term drives many women to want to avoid the whole damn thing and stop playing entirely (after all, chess is a game, a waste of time ultimately, and is supposed to be fun...otherwise there is no point in playing), and drives many to play in women-only events.  Only at the top 1% or less of women chess players would winning segregated prize funds come into play.
