Taking valium helps EVERYTHING!
Does taking valium help playing chess?

Never heard of Tal using valium. Mostly I think he just drank like a fish and smoked like a chimney.

Tal was hooked on morphine for a while and who knows what else those Soviet doctors were giving him. Also benzos are usually given to to people going through alcohol withdrawl so it wouldn't surprise me if Tal took some kind of drug like valium at some point.
Benzos rule.

Just try some pakalolo prior to startying. Your games may not improve, but you will certainly befuddle your opponents with some of your moves.

Taking valium to calm your nerves while playing chess may result in you becoming addicted to the drug...i suggest that drug taking is not the way forward . look into the benefits of yoga or tai chi to help develop relaxation techniques ..sometimes a cup of tea during the game might help ..but stay away from drugs ..you don't want to become a junkie. This is good advice.

It's cheating, like taking cocaine to play snooker or performance enhancers in athletics !
What about downing Red Bull to stay alert?

It's a serious question. Wouldn't something that aids in alertness be a performance enhancer in chess? And thus, shouldn't that be considered cheating?

The problem is one certain drug could be contraproducent at some moments of the game. Dr Andarias: "amphetamins can help a tired player, or a betablockant can help a nervous one. But one same game can include situations where you must stay very calm, and others where you need your nerves at full speed. Whit a betablocker you'll be fine the first couple of hours if the position is not complicated and you can elaborate deep strategycal plans. But probably you'll get into time trouble, and when you need to make several good moves in a few minutes, it kill your reflexes and it will be bad".
"Suppose a basketball player takes a powerful stimulating drug, and he runs like a motorbike. But when making free throws he'll perform badly because he has an altered pulse just when he needs to relax".

My view is that the active ingredient in Red Bull is caffeine, which is not a controlled substance. Cocaine, valium etc are. So, no - that would be like saying coffee use is cheating !

Yep, according to Dr Andarias caffeine could give a positive in current controls for chess players if consumed in enough quantity, although is very unlikely (a very lightweighted player drinking a lot of concentrated coffee for example).

It's legality is totally relevant as to whether it's use should be considered cheating or not. But, thanks for sharing your views on experimenting with drugs
I took some and man did it help my nerves
