How to download PGN files

Sort:
CamelsOfYaqoob

Hi,

I am a beginner/intermediate chess player and I am trying to improve my game. The problem is downloading PGN files is not easy to do [although I have done it before].

Can someone show me where to go to navigate to the "download PGN" page? I do not mind if these are single PGN or multiple PGN downloads.

Note: It may help to know I am not a premium member at the moment, and use chess.com as an app through Facebook.

Thanks in adavance

There are lots and lots of places online, to download pgn collections.  All you have to do is use Google.  Here's just a small, partial list:

Thanks. Sorted. A link to the page would be nice but thanks for the replies. I have downloaded my PGN and will examine shortly.

How would you organise the pgn games? Openings or improvements maybe? Tbh I think I will get a book on knowing your game but it is nice to hear people's preferences for self-improvement. :P

Ah, it looks like I mis-read your original post.  I thought you wanted to download OTHER pgn files.  It now appears as if you just wish to download YOUR games, probably the games you play here and save them in a PGN format.

As far as organizing, I would keep all of your games you play in ONE file.  If you're ever just interested in looking at and examing your French defense games, (for example) you just open your ONE file of all your games, and then sort this file and just pull up the French Defense games.

Thank you very much Estragon. I will look into and possibly install chessbase. And MrEdCollins I should have been more clearer w/ my question.

I have Chessbase, and it comes with openings keys - sorting add-ons which organize games by opening, either strictly by ECO classification or by grouping similar lines by salient features in addition to ECO.  Probably there are similar functions in whatever database program you use.

In Chessbase, whenever you create a new database, you can install a key to sort it, the default key comes up automatically if you click the "openings" tab in the games list of a database window.

Can you please help me install Chessbase. Here is where I downloaded it:

The download is saved as setup.msi [A file type which I did not recognise.] So I installed the SetUp but can not find the program.

Your help would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance

I just spent several minutes looking for the "get PGN" button as it is mentioned on this topic and I can assure you there is no such button. What am I missing here?

If I wanted to download the PGN for that game from it's original page on Chess.com HERE, and save it to a xxx.pgn file on my hard drive, can you describe how to do that?

I hope you're familiar with how to copy and paste text using the Windows clipboard?

1) Click on "Get PGN".

2) When the box pops up, select "Open with...", and select (or find) Notepad. (Therefore, you'll be opening the PGN with Notepad.)

3) Click "OK", and a Notepad box will appear with the game shown as text.

4) Copy the game text to the clipboard.

5) Go to the xxx.pgn file, right-click on it, and open it with Notepad.

6) Scroll to the bottom of the xxx.pgn file and paste the clipboard contents into the xxx.pgn file. (Leave one blank line between games.)

7) Save the xxx.pgn file. Done.
