Improving on blitz

I am terrible at blitz and my chess.com rating is 700 lower in blitz than in online chess (~2000 vs. ~1300). Looking at other player's ratings, having a lower blitz rating than online rating is pretty typical but ~700 seems high.

I have a terrible memory and can't memorize openings--I confess I don't enjoy memorizing them either, which doesn't help--so that clearly plays against me in blitz.

But what else? Are there some general advice and rules of thumbs to focus on to improve on blitz when a player already has a reasonable understanding of chess?

Thanks a lot.

Why is blitz so important?

How come in the forums main page there are 4 posts to this thread, now 5? I only see 3 posts, including this one.

Not sure.

As to why blitz is important, I think everyone can have their opinion about that. Personally I would like to know if this just reflects the fact that I am a slow thinker or that I am just not focusing on the right ideas at all when playing blitz. I don't view it as "so" important but I would like to enjoy this type of game more and be more successful at it.
