I think most kids diagnosed with ADD are just bored.
Is Chess Really Good for Your Brain?
I am by nature very restless, probably had adhd as a child but they called it something else. Chess is great to reign in random thoughts and restlessness. I did chess mentor the other nite until late and by the time I went to bed my head was spinning and I was exhausted.. Got up the next day and my game was sharp! spot on and having actually retained the lessons (chess mentors lessons on rook/pawn endgames is nice) Chess is a fine way to spend idle time as opposed to say video games or substance abuse..

On a serious note (OK, I'm pulling out my psych doctorate credentials now, so pay attention, you guys!): Boys are more often diagnosed with "ADHD" than are girls. Girls, who more often actually have "ADD" (attention deficit disorder Without the hyperactivity), tend to go Underdiagnosed, because they don't annoy teachers.
Of course, whether "diagnosis" is what you're looking for, well, that's a whole other discussion.
Here's the actual professional definition I'm aware of that best defines ADD: "Attention Deficit Disorder consists of an inability to maintain focus on a boring task." In summary, I agree: "Most kids diagnosed with ADD are just bored boys."
Boys can be hyperactive? Who knew?!?
(just wait 'til they get older, they'll all look like me. Just substitute a couch for the pool)

How can you be "hyperactive" on a couch? ... oh, wait... never mind.
Chess is a waste of time. It will not make you better at math or critical thinking or whatever.
lol why are you here?

Ha ha yeah true. So does just playing chess or think you are playing chess but it's just blogging you really are doing.

Just running out the clock, I suppose.
I teach kids that have learning disabilities and have a wide variety of problems, like ADD, Autism, etc.
I have seen children that can't focus on anything for 10 seconds, yet when I sit them down to a chessboard (assuming they are intelligent enough to grasp the rules) they suddenly are in the zone and are concentrating for the entire hour.
Chess is a great tool for developing the mind.
As if this happens with every child. Have you given any of these kids a guitar, or, sat them in front of a piano?
