is it too late to become a GM or at least a IM

I want to know is it too late for me to become grand master or at least an international master. I really work hard to become one.

Yes, all applications were due at 3:00 last Tuesday.

What is it about chess that brings up these questions?  Are there forums for other games/sports that are full of questions like this?  "I've been training really hard in the 100 meters.  Can I make it to the Olympics?"

TunjiGold

well because Chess is of great concern to me.

Hi832

well, whats your fide rating? and how many norms do you have? (ignore nartreb the troll)

And, how old are you now?

Generally speaking, if you have to ask, it's probably never going to happen.

One thing that GMs have in abundance is self-confidence. In order to get an IM/GM title, you have to really want it and believe that you can do it regardless of the odds.

Realistically, it's very rare for anyone starting out in chess after high school to get a GM title. It happens, but it's rare, even for GMs.

If you have absolutely nothing better to do than play chess, you have a chance, provided you keep improving and play FIDE rated events.

It helps if you remove all doubts from your mind.

When you ask another person, you get stats thrown at you.

My rating here is not yet my actual rating. I am just a couple of weeks old as chess.com member. My blitz and bullet have been greatly affected by irregular network. My network is ok and good now, and a couple of months my rating will be around 1900+

millionairesdaughter

You could of course start by fixing that tactics rating.

Will age play any role? I am 28. How do having a long walk on the beach play a role @icyviper. Or do you mean having long meditation and alone study?

Thanks millionaires daughter

If the answer was 'yes, it is too late' would you continue playing chess?

Yes it is WAY WAY TOO LATE.  Pack it up, son.  I suggest you give checkers a try.

Statistically, there's almost no chance of someone in their 20s starting to play competitive chess and becoming a GM.

But there's nothing stopping you from being the anomaly.

There's the Dunning-Kruger effect tho: The less you know about something, the easier it seems to be. So, as you learn more and more about chess, the more you will realise how hard it is. Put one way, there are more NBA basketball players than there are Fide Masters, IMs, and GMs combined in the US.

There are more starting players on the Nigerian Football team than there are IMs and FMs in the country.

Are you going to add to that number?

I've played against opponents who are in their 80's. If you're in your 20's that's roughly 60 years to become a GM. If you put in the hours and do the research there's no reason why nobody here can't turn GM. But a lot of people also have full-time jobs and kids to raise which is another factor.

However, World Champion is a different kettle of fish. I was watching this interview once about Bobby Fischer and he said he knew and played against lots of GMs but none of them were talented.

Psychological Profile Time:

1. His chess.com rating isnt his actual ability <insert excuse here>

2. He/She estimates their real playing strength several hundred pots higher than it really is

3. "In a few months" my rating will be much higher

Depends how much you train and if you're training right.

SmyslovFan

Depends on more than just training. The Soviet Union trained hundreds of thousands of kids to become strong chess players. Less than one per cent became GMs.

It takes much more than just proper training to become a GM.

You need the smell of the blood of your vanquished opponents in your nostrils.
