Is there any chance that a 1300 rated player can beat a 2700 rated player?

A 1300 lose to a GM ? Are you serious ? The only way the 1300 would win would be after the GM was given a lobotomy.

But guys, of course to lose to a 1300 a 2700 would have to play worse than 2700, but he would still be a 2700 by rating (if not for long haha). People can have bad games. That said, losing to a 1300 would be worse than I can imagine. But this distinction between "true 1300" and untrue 1300- I don't buy it.

A super gm has never had a bad enough game to lose to a 1300.

If a 2700 (FIDE) player joined this site, wouldn't they start off with a 1200 rating just like everyone else...

After a while I'd expect their rating to hit 1300+...

I wouldn't expect their rating to stay in the vicinity of 1300 for long if they kept playing here.

Ergo their 1300ness would not be the same as that of a player whose rating has ranged back and forth from 1300-1399 (for example) over the last year.

Well, lots and lots of GM games end up in tactics trainer as 1400 level puzzles, so that's somethings; even if the games were against fellow GMs, they are prone to overlooking things.

no, here user with 2700+ played much-much weeker then 2700 (even 2000 plays stronger) and this 1300 played much-much stronger then 1300.

And the question was "true 1300" beat "true 2700". When you really play in 1300 strenght and opponent in true 2700 power. The answer then is obvious - it's "NO WAY".

Well then the issue is basically tautological. "Can a person win by playing all inferior moves against a person who is playing all superior moves?" No, otherwise, that person would have played some superior moves after all.

That is not the question. I play lower rated players in tournaments and quite often I get equal or worse positions -- just because your overall results are better doesn't mean you will outplay them in every single position, even if you're healthy.

Every once in a while, even I will execute a poor sequence all the way down there at a 2500 level; so it happens.

I don't know... I'm actually thinking the other way around - is  there any way for a GM to beat a 1300?? Undecided

@DjonniDerevnja No way man. If you gave 1300s and 1400s half an hour and Teymour Radjabov two minutes on the clock, Radjabov would win every game.

We played Simultan aganst a 2500+ Gm the thursday before last thursday. He won19 of 32 games, and was beaten by a 1200   that was Caro cann spesialist. But our GM  wasnt Radjabov.

EDit: Correction. He was fideunrated with Norwegian Elo 946.

Edit: the Gm walked very fast, moved within maybe 3 seconds in most moves he did against me. (I lost, he punished all my inaccurasies, and I resigned in move 41).

LOL @ the idea of a 1200 Caro-Kann specialist.

There is some probability on a 1300 beating a 2700.  I dont have the full answer.  But I know this:

I person rated 200 points higher than their opponent will beat their opponent 2/3 games (this is a fact, afaik).

So, there must be some probability a 1300 beats their 2700 opponent.  But there is a positive probability a person can walk though a particular wall as well.

So...like in dumb and dumber, when Lloyd says 'whats the chance of a girl like you and a guy like me getting together?", and she says '1 in a million'.  Lloyd responds (as if hes just seen heavens gates) "So there is a chance".

So it is for the 1300...there is a chance.

This is slightly off-topic, but...

Am I the only one who was moved by that scene - you know, with his optimism and everything? I don't think that was how the director intended for the audience to interpret that scene, but that was how I felt watching it.

Totally unrelated to this post, but I'm happy to see this respect for Radjabov.  I actually have found myself asking 'what would he do?' in my openings here on chess.com. I like his style.

yea!  I have no idea what was intended, but he fully felt there was a chance!  He lit up, like he seen the light, and realized there was a hope.  The 1300 has a chance too!  I love that movie.

The 1300 does have some real probability.  Especially in like a simul situation.

Sorry , I was inaccurate. He has no Fiderating, but the Norwegian Elo 946. I guess thats more like 1350 Fide (I have N-Elo 1029 and 1428 Fide).

You should not underestimate players at that level (actually ca your own level). Such players can be specialist in their favourite opening, and of course not that strong if they must play another opening. I lost for him when he played the Caro Cann against me last winter, and he has beaten very strong players with it later.

I guess it could be looked at that way, but I just saw it as another haha he's dumb moment.

NEVER!!! A 1300 will lose very game, even against a GM of 2500 Elo a 1300 will lose every game. Even against a low expert 2000 Elo a 1300 will lose every game. Even against a 1900 Elo will 1300 lose every game. I think you might get it, you have zero chance to win against a GM.

Elubas

A 1300 won't lose every time to a 1900. I lost to a player rated 500 points lower than me fairly recently. And more than once recently I have gotten into serious trouble against players about 400 points lower rated than me. Sometimes you play your game and it just doesn't work -- the board doesn't just perceive your rating, and force you into a good position.

cornbeefhashvili

Depends on the health of the 2700 player.
