King's Indian 13. g4

This is from a correspondence game I played. g4 is a novelty (at least to my knowledge) and I responded h5 with the plan to play Rf6 to h6 then Kf7 then Qh8, but how would you respond to this?

So apparently chess.com has this thing now where no one sees your thread until it has 4 comments. That's just great. No wonder none of my threads have been getting seen.

This was engine-allowed correspondence but g4 is not an engine move, so I know this novelty was an idea of my opponent. But...

Maybe it is an engine move at a certain depth. Who knows.

I like h5 as it removes white's slight advantage and gives an approximately equal position where the players can acheive a grandmaster draw in short order if they want.

According to my GM database g4 has been played 18 times before, but it is not the most up to date database and non-GM games are also not included. h5 has been played ten times, fxg3 two times and Ng6 one time.

fxg3 hxg3 Ng6 Be3 h5! Qd2 h4! is a promising pawn sac but you already missed that option.

But your h5 is also ok. Stockfish now suggests b6 and a5. I think that is bad, as it does not prevent c5 after Nd3 and b4, so it just helps white to open files on queenside.

I dont like the idea Rf6-h6, Kf7, Qh8. Then you will have to play Ne8 to defend against Nb5. Then your position will be split in two parts, one attacking part on King side (which white can neutralize with Kg2 and Rh1) one defending part on Queenside and some mess inbetween. And your King on f7 is placed suboptimal (seventh rank, a2-g8).

I like the standard Gligoric setup Rf7, Bf8. You then still have the idea Rh7 and Qf6-h8. c7/d6 is also protected. seventh rank is not weak, King is placed better/can go to h8.

Here is a relevant game by Radjabov:

Hope this helps you against your opponent. EDIT I see, you already played that game, well then against future opps Wink
