In regard to my other forum about perfection in chess, the morra gambit has flaws, yes it does give white the initiative, but it dries up after about 8 or 9 moves once black has consolidated and is ready to break the game open :D. For example the main line of the morra gambit is e4 c5 d4 cxd4 c3 dxc3 nxc3 nc6 bc4 e6!

e6 is just one of the solid lines that owns white, as long as people know their lines against this gambit than theyre good, but since about 75% dont know them it is still a good phychological gambit to use against an opponent

by the way, if you want someone who is a master at owning the morra gambit, and will show you why it favors black with accurate play, see this user on chess.com:  Adamperfection, this guy helps so much with theory and is almost my chess tutor when i talk to him, a damn smart chess guy

heres a link to him if you want to add him

Also you can see some the morra lines at www.shredderchess.com or see chess.com's opening database

I lost to the Morra after defending and getting a superior postion, then blundering a few weeks ago. It's an annoying but not very good opening in my opinion. Best for shorter time limits

I prefer 2.Nf3 personally Cool and hope to get into a Fischer or Dragon variation

I don't know much about this opening, but three moves for a pawn seems like fun -- and probably at my level roughly equal and playable for both sides.  GMs may have refuted it, but I imagine it would take a lot of accurate moves by black.

d4 was played.

I wouldn't say I'm that good, but the smith morra is not a good choice against someone who is properly prepared(and I am very prepared on the latest theory). e6! is my favourite line and I believe it causes the most problems for white blunting that diagonal gives white serious difficulties.

Orangehonda how is it three moves for a pawn? I thought it was 2.

the second diagram shows clearly that white is up 1 tempo(development-wise and it is his move so 2 i guess).

Heh, I temporarily forgot how to count Wink

what happens if white tricks you into playing 4... d6?

for example,1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 d6(I normally play this move against the open sicilian) 3. d4 cd4 4. c3!? dxc3 5.Nxc3

Nc6 6. Bc4

This looks much better for white than in the other diagram where e6 has been played.

lebronjames6

ok then you play e6 next move ^^

oh so youre saying that its an improvement, ok i played this against adamperfection in an actual online chess game, it didnt work out too well, ask him, he probably knows these lines :P

if you play 6... e6, then the gambit might almost be sound(I say almost because it is probably still a black win with best play), because the e pawn is precariously defended only by the f pawn and the c8 bishop(it is better to also defend it with the d pawn like in the other diagram), white is up closer to 3 and a half moves in development, and white has a chance to play e5 sometime and open up the position for his lead in development.

dude i gave you a link to adam perfection, go ask him, i dont know that line well!

If you think that all you need to do is to play e6 and defang Smith Morra, you will probably have a few unpleasant surprises.

i would like to recommend the white side of the morra gambit, yes it does apparently run out of steam after about nine moves, the only quick wins likely are if black plays an early e7 - e5 fatally weakening f7, if black plays reasonably then white should keep trying to play good developing moves & look to win the argument over the d5 square, you shouldn't go far wrong

well i have been surprised at how many chess.com people have responded with the early e7 - e5 & their ratings weren't 'bad'

i enjoyed our games in round 3 of the Sicilian theme tourney, and yes you won the black side of a morra, the line selected included e6 nge7 which i feel is a fairly solid option, although in my view white retains a positional edge
