I used to play a monthly chess tournament in a jazz café. It was about as relaxed atmosphere as you get-the tournament started at 6 PM and would last until mightnight, alcohol was sold, cigarettes smoked, and of course-jazz music would play. The event had its atmosphere and I certainly wouldn't want to put it down, but I eventually stopped playing it. One reason was the quick pace (2x15), I flagged in most of my games. The other was the late hours on a school night, and so much disturbances. It was basically the nerd's equivalent of a party, not a proper tourney.
In serious chess tournaments, I believe listening to music with headphones on isn't allowed because of the possibility of cheating-a hands-free cell, recorded opening prep, and so on. It's a shame, because sometimes the playing venue is noisy and classical music would actually help the player concentrate.
However, if I'm playing seriously, I always choose dead silence over music. One simply cannot concentrate as well if he's listening to music. But if I want to have some blitz fun on-line, I still like to put on some jazz :)
Have you ever played chess with some music?if you have and it felt good..why dont they allow music (optional) in chess tournys?..and again i ask why?
