Have you ever played chess with some music?if you have and it felt good..why dont they allow music (optional) in chess tournys?..and again i ask why?

I used to play a monthly chess tournament in a jazz café. It was about as relaxed atmosphere as you get-the tournament started at 6 PM and would last until mightnight, alcohol was sold, cigarettes smoked, and of course-jazz music would play. The event had its atmosphere and I certainly wouldn't want to put it down, but I eventually stopped playing it. One reason was the quick pace (2x15), I flagged in most of my games. The other was the late hours on a school night, and so much disturbances. It was basically the nerd's equivalent of a party, not a proper tourney.

In serious chess tournaments, I believe listening to music with headphones on isn't allowed because of the possibility of cheating-a hands-free cell, recorded opening prep, and so on. It's a shame, because sometimes the playing venue is noisy and classical music would actually help the player concentrate.

However, if I'm playing seriously, I always choose dead silence over music. One simply cannot concentrate as well if he's listening to music. But if I want to have some blitz fun on-line, I still like to put on some jazz :)

The only problem I can see is that not everyone likes the same music and how loud it should be. I could not play chess with a heavy metal band, or rap blaring out. I do like soft/smooth jazz, or classical, movie themes etc.

Wonder if they ever held a tournament in a strip tease joint, with strip music in the backgroundCool

I always play the William Tell Overture whenever a pawn of mine is approaching promotion.

I read that Bobby Fischer listened to music while analyzing chess, but I suspect most of us mortals would be better off concentrating on one thing at a time - either chess or music, not both. I generally stop hearing the music when I'm trying to concentrate on something else such as a chess book or novel.

Multitasking? I can’t do two things at once. I can’t even do one thing at once.

Yes..not heavy music..bt soothing music, music that takes the mind to another level of thinking..even some good old classicals mate, that kind. Why nt allow playas to come with a private mp3 of songs that uplift them..bt with earphones too.the mp3 or ipod should be carefully searchd..to make sure that there are prematch rehearsals record..until then can we say CHECK MATE?

On chess.com, yes.

In an OTB friendly game with an ipod, yes.

In a tournament game, no.

I've never played in an official rated tournament, but I've played in a few interschool tournaments and I think the rules are the same.

Slightly related, at an OTB tournament I'd suffered through a tough game, my opponent had a slight edge the entire time.  Finally I've reached an endgame where there is some real chances for a draw, and two kibitzers are about 3 feet away from my opponent (the other side of the table from where I'm sitting) and one whispers loud enough for me to hear about how he thinks I might have a draw with the certain idea I'm trying for (basically I want to liquidate pawns on the kingside).

While this idea isn't exactally rocket science, I'm pretty angry that they would say something like that so loudly right in front of our game.  Luckily my opponent had his earphones on and Ipod playing :)

I listen 2 music when I analyze games; but mainly, I play music (sometimes), as a training exercise, 2 help me (force me) 2 concentrate; same with reading, I listen 2 instrumentals.  This is because, I feel I must b on point; wherever, whenever; I can't allow myself 2 b distracted by sounds, images, etc... .  I play basketball, & must b able to play my game, with hecklers, music, hostile environment, etc...; it's the world stage, & we must focus; period!  Yet, when I play real games, (4 money), I create the silence I need 2 concentrate; & n these games, I am 90% of the time victorious; wherever, whenever.  Listening 2 music, while playing chess has helped me tremendously.

Well, i like to analyze games here on Chess.com with some blues music in backround.

It's also acceptable in live chess.com game, but at OTB game i prefer silence or, when playing with a close friend, talk :)

Just don't make any wrong moves. Problem solved.

listening to music when you're playing chess, it help you to keep look out or at least motivate!
