The Psychology of Playing Chess

well, I don't use the term stress much, but in any field of endeavor, with goals, there is going to be something that is more 'animated' than say, death. Only the dead feel no stress. Living involves stress. and we're not talking about stress in general, we/re talking about a few things so far, which include 1. pressures during games which come from draw offers with players above or below you in rank, 2. feeling confident, and then losing confidence, 3. hating certain types of positions m like cramped positions, and feeling cramped when we have to play cramped positions, 4. failing to look wide for candiadates, 5. not wanting to win against women or children, 6, not wanting to lose, 7. focusing on the outcome of the game instead of the particular position...and probably a few others.

we're also looking for a game here and there, that someone wants to supply, with their 'emotional annotations'.

Excellent point SS,dont have the annotations, but just yesterday in our chess club I had set up an incridible sequece of a check where he is forced to take my bishop and.when i move the knight again a discovered check ensues. At this point his qween will be attacked only if he has taken my other "free" knight before I have initiated this sequence of check and then discovered check, resulting in a qween for a knight and a bishop! Well as I contemplating a juicy victory against the current state champion my "friend" blurts out ,"wow,he can get your queen Dave!" Its just a game, dont loose sleepbover it guys!

In the bigger scheme of things, chess is just a game and we should all treat it that way! What stress?

I treated chess that way too. But in professional chess, interclubs, interschools, etc or even weekend close and open tournaments, stress become a part. Human by nature is competitive and wants to be a winner. Online chess could probably preserve the spirit of "Chess is fun".

hello everybody, this is a public forum in 'name' only. Its actually a place for people to bring forward...well read the introduction...post your annotated games with annotations relating to eomtional states you were in that affected your choice of moves, or how you wish you had played under a different emotional state, or...read the intro and the first few posts, and then join the discussion. Please make substantive posts; this isn't going to be a place where people post one liners or argue...this will be a place where we work together to deepen our understanding of the relationship between our chess moves, our chess understanding, and our state of mind.
