Why would someone set a game for 24 hours and then go on vacation after their partner told them she was not happy she forgot to check the time constraints and would not have taken the game had she realized it was set at 24 hours per move?
I think it is because this person was just trying to use the time constraint to garner a win. Am I being paranoid?
Scarblac
It's a perfectly common time constraint here. As is going on vacation. I don't think your comment is related (he's on vacation for all of his games where it's his move, not just yours).
Most of my games have more than 24 hours per move. This happened to me one other time where someone set up a short game like that and I didn't realize it was such a short timeframe and I lost the game on time. Then I guess I am just being paranoid? ok.
Writch
Thanks Writch. At least now I feel like maybe my intuition is not just paranoia.
Loomis
It's suspicious that a player doesn't time out? You have to be kidding me. It should be normal behavior to never time out.
I agree that it's not typical to have 5 timeout wins in your last 10 games. But how is that suspicious? What are you suspicous of? That he somehow has a way of inducing his opponent's to time out? How does this guy get blamed for his opponent's time outs?
blackfirestorm666
Oh yeah lets just jump on this guy because he invites people to games and THEY time out because they are stupid enough to not check the time controls of the challenge.
rooperi
I don't know what this proves. I have over 1800 games, no timeouts.
Sometimes my opponents time out, too often for my liking, I would prefer it never happens. Is this suspicious too?
<sarcasm on> Yes, rooperi, you are exploiting a loophole in the system. <sarcasm off>
I wouldn't say it is because I'm stupid so much as that I just don't expect people to use their time constraints in an unethical way. Maybe it is showing a lack of judgement on my part but that doesn't equate with stupidity so you need to choose your words more wisely Donna, sweety.
Loomis, what do you think would be the reason for someone to put a 24 hour time constraint on only certain games? LIke I said, most of my games have longer time constraints so it just confuses me as to why he randomly picks people to play with 24 hours constraints.
Writch, the first thing you said was that it looks like it could be minor abuse. You followed this up by describing his behaviour as suspicious. Saying that you are not blaming the person in question is back-tracking, no matter how you slice it.
You can't just call your statement an opinion and have it no longer subjected to being right or wrong. I can't just say "in my opinion your posts in this thread are intended to ruin the reputation of one of the users of chess.com" and when you try to defend yourself say "hey, don't call my opinion false, opinions can't be false!" On the other hand, you did say that your opinion can't be true either. So I suppose I can just ignore it.
I don't think he's exploiting a human weakness. I think he just became interested in playing games that don't take as long, so put out seeks for 24h per move instead of longer. Isn't the simplest explanation usually right?
And then he went on vacation...it just doesn't make sense. Oh well...
Loomis, what do you think would be the reason for someone to put a 24 hour time constraint on ONLY CERTAIN GAMES and then go on vacation? I really would like to find the simple answer here.
DPenn was I actually talking about you, sweety?? I was referring to all the players that accepted these 1 day per move games and then timed out.
Fact is we all need to look at all challenges BEFORE the games start and not complain about them once they start and the opponent uses vacation.
All you can do is finish the game and not play him again.
Well, when I put out game seeks, I normally do 3 at a time. I would prefer all of them to be 1 day, but I found that often you get 3 new games, all with the same opponent, who also has 3 matching seeks. So to avoid this, I make a 1 day, 2 day and 3 day seek. Purely practical reasons for me...
TheGrobe
Two factors -- one, the desire to play games of different time intervals contributing to "only certain" games having a 24 hour time control and the other, the ability -- or rather the right as implemented here -- to go on vacation contributing to, well, going on vacation. Both are features, not loopholes.
