Its a board game being played with electronic video components.
Are words on a monitor really words or just video images?
More properly a port of the board game to computer/online/video.
We're still playing chess as legitimately as those who are playing non-sanctioned games otb.
To call it a video game does it no justice as almost all video games are far more trivial than chess.
