Who is playing the Sicilian Defence???

GreedyPawnGrabber

I like people who play the Sicilian.  After 1. e4 c5 2. f4  all their memorized lines are gone.

2. Nc3 and 3. f4 is better. they still remember 1. e4 c5 2. f4 d5 :P

There is a lot of theory in the Nc3 line. If you play 2.f4 and if 2...d5 then e5 and later d3, c3, g3, Bg2 and so on black are squeezed.

Not me, but thanks for asking. What do you mean you don't care? Anyways, I might start playing it in serious games if 2.Nc3 and 2.f4 are really popular - around here that is (which I doubt, but my doubt is based on master games stats).  I mostly never adopted the SD in serious games because of all the theory, not because I don't like it.

I doubt that 2.f4 will be a problem for players with or without much SD experience who also have a grasp of general opening principles. It's true 2.Nc3 (Closed SD) has a fair amt of theory but that can be easily side-stepped with one of several "footnote" lines that are just as good as the "main line" in the Closed SD IMHO.

I play it, but i was thikng of trying the caro-kann.

Fromper

Not as black, but I like attacking it with the Smith-Morra Gambit as white. One of my favorite openings!

blueemu

I used to play it in tournaments quite regularly.

Like so:

blasterdragon

i play the sicilian its quite a good opening

chessknight02

I don't play Sicilian Defence but it's good opening.

chessthing

The best players in the world.

Play 1... e5. Sometimes just as sharp, but you don't get anything from learning the sideline in move 46 which seems to give white a slight edge.

You get something from learning the sidelines on move 3 though.

Play chess, don't let the computer/world class players play for you!

Mainline_Novelty

Screw this 1...e5 vs 1...c5 debate...imma just sit on the fence and continue playing both.

warmachine77

Why in the world would you feel a need to lash out with such a bullying remark and take the time to link to that person's profile? Chess.com is not the only place to play chess, and even if it were and he had only played 16 games on chess.com in his entire life, he could still play the Sicilian defense and be counted as a Sicilian player.

netzach

None of the 16 played were sicilian and he's talking bs?

Here are his 2 most recent responses to 1.e4:

I have played over 100 so think am qualified to respond to such foolish statements.

Occasionally just to spice things up...i use the Kan Sicilian or Dragon type of structures

Ah, you should let all the IMs and GMs know they don't need to play 2.Nc3 to avoid the Tal Gambit anymore, because they can just decline it and then black will be "squeezed".

Of 285 games declining the Tal Gambit with e5 as you suggest, white's winning percentage is less than 25% and black's >50%

The Sicilian is my favorite opening against 1.e4 because it allows me to attack white's kingside from the queenside in the Sozin and similar lines. It is also great for controlling the dark squares in the center.
