chess.com computer hangs ubuntu
I once spent an entire day faffing about trying to get "play against computer" working on Ubuntu, and I never got it to work properly.
If you want to finish a game against a chess engine, I suggest taking a copy of the PGN and importing into xgame or something to play against the engine of your choice. It's the only practical thing to do on Linux, in my experience.
download Java?
Java I already have. I don't that the problem is related to java in any way. If you don't have java on your computer, that will not hang your computer! :D
Are you using OpenJDK (I think it is the default in Ubuntu) or Oracle Java? You might consider switching to Oracle's original implementation.
I tried this on both Ubuntu/Windows, and IE, Firefox and Chrome with original Java implementations, and still couldn't get to play! Every time I get a different error. What if there was a big conspiracy going on here that everybody who says (s)he managed to play against computer is lying and actually there was no computer engine????
Hahaha.. well.. I have windows 8 also and computer works fine there.. I am not getting why any staff member doesn't look interested in this issue.
I absolutely love Linux, and have been running it for 13 years, but you just have to accept that when you run Linux you're on your own in terms of support. Linux is a gigantic mess. Trying to support it is insane. Whenever I can, I switch my friends and family back to Windows, to let them become someone else's problem.
And hey, as far as that goes, I'm running Ubuntu 12.04 LTS here, and it turns out the play against computer stuff DOES work! It didn't when I was on here around a year ago, and God only knows what I accidentally did to make that happen, but this proves it's at least possible.
That being said, if you're running into the kind of trouble that's freezing your kernel, dude, just let it go. You'll pull your hair out for nothing.
Indeed. The most likely culprit is something to do with the video drivers. The other possibility is audio. Those are the main two things that can cause the kernel to freeze. Assuming his kernel is even frozen. Most of the time the kernel isn't really dead, it's just stuck in a situation where it will take you several hours of patient trial to find and kill the process that's consuming resources out of control and effectively freezing the system. Having proven I can do it, when that happens now, I just hit the reset button and cut my losses. (I've had uptimes well over a year though, so this kind of thing really isn't that common.)
I am experiencing this from many days. Even some of my friends told me that even they have this problem. Whenever I click play against computer anywhere on chess.com, it hangs and I need to restart my system. Any help?
