The only databases not allowed are those with pre-stored engine evals (which do exist).
This is not to be confused with your own notes, which could obviously include stuff about engine evals, and things like that. But it's different when the online DB has engine evals for every single move in it. A problem of scale.
I sometimes use an online database when deciding to move in my online chess games. However, I've always entered my moves and explored the resulting common opening moves from past games/
