Is it allowed to search an online database for a specific position?

I sometimes use an online database when deciding to move in my online chess games. However, I've always entered my moves and explored the resulting common opening moves from past games/

Is it legal to search position by entering the fen, like in the link below?

Thanks in advance for any clarification on this. :)

[As I understand it, you can consult the database anyway you like, so long as using the database is permitted. Mod.]

Yep, I think it's perfectly fine. Well I hope so, because it's what I often do :p

By using the FEN, you're just skipping entering your moves.

It's legal but it's a damn boring way to play

The only databases not allowed are those with pre-stored engine evals (which do exist).

This is not to be confused with your own notes, which could obviously include stuff about engine evals, and things like that. But it's different when the online DB has engine evals for every single move in it. A problem of scale.

Sure, it's fine. Any static assistance is OK.

I haven't been online; it's so nice to come back and have this issue cleared up.

Thanks very much Thomas, losingmove, ozzie and batgirl :) :) :)
