take back in a rated game??

In two of my games, started as rated, my opponent either made an unintentional move or a move so  bad that it spoils the game and isnt worth a W.

Is there a way to convert the game to unrated take back?

If not is there a way to offer the opponent a way to abort the game??

Thanks.

Yes, at the moment it is not possible to get a takeback in a game but we are considering to add this feature in the near future once we work out the details so that this option cannot be abused.

FICS has it (but there is no submit button).  So I wondered.  On the other hand I play correspondence with a submit button so I suppose one needs to be exceptionally innattentive.

Thanks for comment.

if the game isn't going well and you want to abort the game all you need to do is press resign

Tricklev

In Fics you aren't allowed takebacks in team matches or tournament though.

My thoughts exactly.

If you really don't want a win from it, you can always offer a draw.

Skwerly

Agreed, draw offer is probably your best bet if you don't want the victory.

That's better not to be any take backs .

Wish I hadnt shot my mouth off; I lost one of those games!!

Another less orthodox option: play a bad move yourself that creates a position worth fighting for again.

As for myself, I would just take the win. Le the blunder be the blunder it yearns to be.

Solution or partial solution:

A willing beneficiary of the bad move, can move the piece he would move to take advantage of the error one square. Then the person making the bad move returns the erroring piece to it's original place. Then it is his move. A chess acquaintance  taught me this. We have done this, and it works.

I do not know if this works if a capture is involved.

I think that  "TAKE BACK" is not a bad option if you want to design it for the future try creating the option similar to a "DRAW" where both players would need to Agree that the game should be aborted with no effect on the ratings...

rooperi

I really don't like this. I will never ask for a takeback, and never agree to give one to my opponent.

And I just know, because of this, some people will get upset, and start arguments and abuse.

dsmeaton

i think rooperi's point is good ... having the ability to takeback a move gives players the chance to complain if a takeback request is refused.

this would give root to more rude behaviour in games ... whereas, not having the option, means nobody can complain. people would have nobody else to blame but themselves for bad moves.

there would also be people who have made moves thinking their move was good, then realising that they're gonna get nailed, ask for a takeback, saying the move was an error (when it wasn't).

takeback moves open up wayyy too many possibilities for abuse, fights and nastiness.

having said that, takebacks in unrated games would be good for players trying to learn and improve.

In online chess, players have the possibility to consider their moves as long as they want, so takebacks are really unnecessary. I would not like this feature being available.

One chess site has a "takeback request" button which asks the opposing player if he will allow a takeback. The takeback is only allowed if the other player agrees. I think this is wise as the usage of a mouse or similar (touchpads, etc.) invites mistakes that otherwise would never happen (king moving one square instead of castling being one obvious example), and also allows for fairer games in which an obvious mistake is made yet both players prefer to play a competitive game till the end.

That program also had a "replay from move __" request, which would also be a nice addition IMHO. The result from a completed game would stand, with the replay being for educational or fun value alone.

Along these lines, Fisher Shuffle Chess/Chess 960 would be a nice and easy-to-program addition as well, either for unrated play or with rated play for 960 games alone (with regular chess retaining its own ratings). Adding Chess960 might also attract new members who can now only play 960 on other sites, and would be nice for the numerous casual or semi-casual members of this site who are uninterested in doing deep opening study of standard chess and/or just want some variation. I think this would be a significant enough number of people to make this addition worthwhile.

Thanks for the site, nice work.

I must say, the abuse complaint wouldnt get anywhere, would it? Still, the takeback option is a considerably iffy idea. It has a few too many problems for, me personally, to feel all that okay to have it.

take back button?...sounds like trouble.

I am involved in a game where the "goof" actually involved his queen taking my covered knight. He will now loose his queen, which is unfortunate as he was in a strong position.. and the game was shaping up for an interesting end game.

It is a honest misake, as the obvious next move was for him to move the square next to it... before I even retuned to the game there was comment in the chat box saying that he slipped, so in this case it seems like it was an honest mistake.

I have looked at the board and there is no way of returning to the position by some following moves (even it he does give up one of his knights in return).. and in any case, there is no gaurentee that he will follow the agreed moves to the return anyway.

It is a rated game, in a tournament.

If there was a "take back" button this is deffo the situation it would be used in... maybe even have a timeout of say 1 minute on the availability of said button to address mouse slips etc. BUT unfortunatly there isn't, and as this is a rated tournament game I am reluctant to offer a draw (or similar).

I suppose I just continue and take his queen... and probably win the game (there you go, I have said it now!)
