live chess

Hi,

are there any news on live chess in the chess app? The last weeks i felt myself drawn to fics because of good apps, but i always liked chess.com more.

I've started to give up, and have gotten a membership on the Internet Chess Club (ICC @ http://chessclub.com).  There's a number of clients on Mac, PC and iPad/iPhone, and I'm really enjoying the Team 4545 League (http://team4545league.org), which is a long time control live tournament.  ICC also time stamps the games I play, so I can see how my time management is doing.

On a similar note, I've started a paid subscription on chesstempo.com, which has a much richer feature set on tactics training. Although they don't have offline tactics training on device, where chess.com still shines.  Perhaps a partnership between chess.com and chesstempo.com makes sense here, like the partnership for Chess Mentor?

These are all things that have been asked for on chess.com by myself and other members, but haven't managed to get any traction for.  ICC has a less user friendly interface, but the lack of features on chess.com are starting to bother me.

The best move chess.com has made is creating more videos for improving players, especially the ones by David Pruess. That's really what I use the site for now, and finishing off my remaining correspondence games.

An ICC account in conjuntion with the iChessPack HD app seems to be the best option that I've found (you can also play on FICS).  I also quite like the InstantChess app.  It's super quick to get a game but you'll need to pay (something like £4 for 100 games) to make it worth while.  I heard somewhere that live chess on the chess.com app is comming though, that would be good.

Yes, that's exactly what I'm using.  The ICC app is improving, but the iChessPack HD console functionality is the best.

What's the main difference between fics and icc, and why do you prefer icc?

I use iChessPack HD only for fics in the moment.

FICS is free, and ICC is pay.  Similar interface, but ICC has many more features like videos, simuls with titled players, and a lot of GMs, IMs and NMs play there.

For me the big pulls are the Dan Heisman videos (google his Novice Nook column if you haven't read it), the fact they timestamp the games so I can review my time management, but the really big one is the Team 4545 League .  With my young son it's really hard to go to the local chess club or get into weekend tournaments.  Team 4545 is the next best thing for me to play meaningful slow games.

I do use FICS as well, but generally when I'm tired or distracted, leaving ICC for "serious" chess.

The ICC app deserves a mention.  I've been trying it out recently and am rather impressed.  I prefer the graphics of the board and pieces (2D) over iChessPack HD, they much more crisp, reminiscent of the old Chessmaster programme for PC.

All the necessary options seem to be there and the interface seems less buggy than iChessPack HD. I’m particularly happy with the email game feature which will email all games by default (if that’s what you want).

I would still like to see a portrait mode available and a larger board that uses more of the iPad’s screen.  iChessPack HD excels in both these regards but I find that the thick white outline around both the white and black pieces (on all 2d pieces) doesn’t work for me.  It’s a minor detail but it seems to effect my pattern recognition.

Nice clean graphics seems to be often overlooked in many chess apps.

You're so right, i'm a 3d designer and i also think that the icc app is extremely well designed. Since i discovered this little gem i tend to play only on the iphone.

I also like the submit button very much, since i've lost quite a few games with ichesspack through accidental inputs. How i would love an ipad version....

I've been playing the iPad version!

I hope the chess.com folks are seeing this wishlist for iPad/iPhone apps!

Bensbooks you really made my day....

We need Live Chess on iPad! Laughing

Live Chess works fine on the iPad except that there is no sound. Also, the game chat is tricky to enter but it does work. My biggest wish is for Chess.com to abandon Adobe Flash so that iPad owners can enjoy all of the video lessons and Chess.com/TV which are currently unavailable on the iPad.

ahh, through the browser some of those things kind of work, but not very well.  The ask is for these things to be added to the chess.com app.  The videos for example are available from within the app, but without search it's difficult to use.

Have been playing live chess through chess.com on the PC (rather than the iPad through ICC).  Really impressed with how quickly I can get a game.  I am really looking forward to having live chess through the chess.com app and suspect that I will probably ditch ICC, Instant Chess and playchess.com.  Then I will have correspondance chess and live chess all in one place!  Bring on live chess!!!

LOL, wrote my provoking comment this morning, just to see live chess arrive this evening. Should have done that earlier. Bad jokes aside, great work i've already played 2 games on my iphone - great work! the updated review is coming right now!

Thank you
