Sick of Live Chess Bugs?

Sort:
Dragonbice

I'll just get right to the point:

Live chess is so bugged and I'm sick of it. It has always been bugged and it has always been the very same problems and people have always complained about the same things over and over again.

Why is nothing ever done about this?? Just fix it or sue Java for selling you such crappy software, start using a different platform, or, you know, whatever.

Chess.com is quite obviously well aware of these issues and I'm, quite obviously, sick of complaining about them; dissapearing pieces, white pawns that look like black queens, playing Bc4 and the Bishop seems to end up on h6 instead, and so on.

Frankly, I don't want to hear: "We're sorry for your inconvenience, we assure you that we're working on it." Excuse my seemingly harsh tone, but that has never been true in the past. I write this in a forum thread, rather than a support message since I'm pretty sure that others want an explanation as well. What, exactly, is being done - if anything at all?

Good for you!

A lot of players have though. There has been many forum threads about this since I joined, I'm not making it up :)

As of the end of october i have not been able to play any games on live using my computer (i actually went to a friends house to see if i could maybe play there) and sure enough i was able too... but everytime i use my own computer to play it gives me this ever since the end of october the Picture is a bit big so i'll just post the link

http://i48.tinypic.com/25t7n8g.jpg

I only wish i could continue to play live on Chess.com (not some other chess sites) for two reasons... A) i feel since there are more members the ratings are a bit more fair (which is to say the matches i play are very well paired compared to other sites) B) since i live near an airport and have dsl i often "Missclick" or whenever i click and drag a piece it sometimes thinks i let go of the clicker and i play innacurately leaving me completely helpless and so far chess.com is the only site where i can click the piece and the desired square so as to make sure i don't "missclick" or "mouse slip" as i've also heard it being called

That there are my two cents on the topic, thank you

A while ago, my anti-virus software (AVG) found a virus on my computer. It was a virus created due to a "Java exploit", meaning bad people use the vulnerabilities of the Java platform to mess with other peoples computers. I checked it out on the web, in articles on news sites and other community forums and the weaknesses of Java is apparently well known, making the users vulnerable to attack. This is not the first time this happens and after removing the virus, everything works fine but it usually shows up again after a while. Playing on chess.com is the only time I use Java - at least knowingly - and I don't frequent any 'dodgy' websites and if I download anything, I scan it before I open it. Of course I can't claim that I know for sure where this Java exploit virus came from. In any case, I think chess.com should investigate this and I would be glad if anyone from the staff had anything to say about it.

Thank you,

Dragonbice,

You don't need Java to play live chess.

I've  checked support tickets and the most recent one I can find from you was submitted over 3 months ago.

Which browser and version are you using and on which OS/OSX ?

If is possible, before playing again, can you click on the link below for me please? You'll see a large white page with the text in the corner saying 'chess.com cookies cleared'. Once you see that, close the browser then re-open it and log back in

Thank you, kohai, for your attention.

I guess I was wrong about Java then, I always thought it was Java based! :) However, the problems with Live Chess still affect me and others (regardless of whether it's Java based or not).

Regarding support tickets: the problems described come and go, they 'pop up' from time to time. Why, I couldn't say. There's no point in writing support tickets when I know that Live Chess will probably work again, tomorrow. I just wish you guys would fix this once and for all, for everyone's sake.

I'm using Firefox 16.0.2 on Windows XP sp3. I've used the same OS since I joined chess.com. Firefox is frequently updated to the latest version, meaning that I've used the latest version of Firefox since I joined; it therefore seems unlikely that the browser version is an issue since I experience these difficulties every now and again, and have done so since joining.

I clicked the cookie-link. On a sidenote, I'm very careful when it comes to cookies, I frequently check what cookies are stored by Firefox and I actively accept or deny all third-part cookies. This, I have been doing only for the last year or so (before that, I accepted all cookies). I've been a member since the 27th of August 2010, meaning the problem probably isn't me having denied some cookie that was needed either. :)

Thank you for this and any further help,

Dragonbice

Something here might help, at any rate won't hurt or make matters any worse and is a good start for all online problems:

There was a game I played on my ipod in which one of my opponent's pieces (his knight) turned invisible.  It would've driven me mad if it weren't so hilarious, because I played through it and lost a winning endgame.

That's bad, don't know how you cope with those awful piece images.

OK, two things.

First, does this still happen if you use a different set of pieces?

second, I asked which browser/OS etc so I can try to replicate :)

I have XP on one of my old laptops, I'll have to update the FF browser on it though but i'll see if I can replicate it.

Overall I'd say white has a strong positional advantage.

OK, two answers then ;)

First: now, all of a sudden, it works again, so I can't check if it works with a different set of pieces. :S

Second: Scroll up. I replied on that in #7. Perhaps I didn't include everything you needed to know? If so, specify please, what it is that you need, in addition to what is presented in post #7.

Actually, I'd say Black is winning; it's very, very hard to mate when there's no King around! Cool

I don't know if anyone has encountered this in Live Chess but at a certain point in the game I cant move certain pieces anymore, decisive moves I can't do because the piece just won't move !! Lost a few games because of this bug, when I was supposed to get the upperhand. Maybe its a Java applet thing, because at on my smartphone I dont seem to have this (I'll check it again to be sure)

Dragonbice

Well then, I guess nothing was done this time as well.

Hey Anthony,

Unfortunately, since I don't know why these problems occur, I can't recreate them. They happen randomly, although usually when starting Live Chess, very rarely during play although that has occurred as well. One day, I'm fine and there are no problems, the next day, there are. It mainly seems to be troubles with displaying the piece images.

Here's what my board look like this evening; the squares that looks like... I don't know what they look like - are supposed to be white pawns:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/s1yikp5ddtoz2av/board2.bmp

Usually, the images are not displayed at all, when there is trouble brewing, these weird pawn images are new today, to me as well.

Thank you for helping out,

Tim

My online chess has been totally software BUG infested for a couple weeks, moves I play keep bouncing back, what is up with this? Provisional moves are hopeless, I cannot get any moves to register the screen flashes and returns to the original position. Sometimes click on start square and end works others only dragging works - getting annoying.

Which browser and version are you using?  What color does the square go as the pieces are bouncing?
