you need to CLAIM the draw

Power2People

a)  how do you claim the draw?

b) does the opponent need to agree to the draw?

c) does the repetition rule involve only your own piece repeating 3 times...or does the opponnent need to repeat same position (in response to mine) thrice too?

alanford

a) you press the button

b)no

c)if the position repets three times, you can claim the draw

"A player declares a draw if the same exact position is repeated three times (though not necessarily three times in a row)"

Power2People

OK, let's see if I understand this completely:

1)  the exact same position is played by each of us, and so I claim a draw.

2) Can my opponent refuse to accept my valid claim?

3) or is my claim automatically accepted by the game's programming (since the computer can verify my claim as valid)?

alanford

"A player declares a draw if the same exact position is repeated three times (though not necessarily three times in a row)"

1) yes, threee times the same position, and you claim the draw

2) Your opponent cannot refuse a claimed draw for three times repetition rule.

3) The button you press CLAIM DRAW is next to the board on screen.Once you press it for three repetition rule, draw is automatic. The software on chess. com makes a board "know" three times same exact position.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There is another usage of same button. If you want draw by agreement - than opponent has to agree, you press DRAW,button is pressed from his side and game is drawn by agreement. If it is not pressed, you will see making his move..

alanford

Anyway..if you dont press the button DRAW  or CLAIM DRAW , the game goes on..

Thanks a million!  I never fully understood this rule until you helped me.   I have not yet encountered a 3-repeat situation (though I once came close), and so needed to know how to handle it.

AweLalagato

This is what I did once (in a losing position):

3 move (or maybe 4) repitition.

Claim draw (click draw button right next to resign).

Game ends in draw.

Ghibytzu

On the following position i clicked the draw button several times and it didn't came to an end as a draw.

It's easy to miss if you're not looking for it.  When a position is repeated for the 3rd time, the button that usually reads "offer draw" will change to read "claim draw".  If either player clicks on "claim draw" the game ends immediately as a draw.  If neither player clicks it and another move is made so that now the current position is one that is no longer a 3 (or more) time repeated move, the claim opportunity is over and the button will be back to "offer draw".  The repetition draw can only be claimed while a repeated position is still the current position.  If that position later repeats again, or a different position appears for the 3rd (or more) time, there will be another "claim draw" opportunity.

I see.  So before computers, the players would have to consult the move list, or only rely on their memory if no move list was being kept.  I can see a problem in whose memory is accepted as accuate, so I'm glad the Chess.com computer is now on the watch for we mere humans :-)

Exactly, and this is one purpose of the move list in tournament play.  If someone calls over the TD to claim that the move he is going to make will satisfy the repetition criterion, the TD consults the move lists to determine if the claim is correct.

Ironic, I have to go to Cystem Phailure to successfully learn the draw system!  BTW, congrats on all your global games cited in your blog.   And you did that in just 1.5 years, right?   This website really is a global village and I've been noting how frequently I get non-US players even in the random match-ups.

Cystem_Phailure

Yes, 1.5 years, although my last country count in the blog was quite some time ago and needs updating-- it probably reflects about the first full year of games..  I've had a few new added countries since then but the rate of new ones is slowing.  I could start seeking out new countries specifically, I suppose, instead of just taking random game assignments in tournaments.

Power2People

Go for it...your search criteria is a nation you need... and only then the opponent's rating
