Why Abort?

Where is the "harm" in aborting ?.

There is no harm in aborting. But it happens to me successive aborting games just because there is a difference in ranking. If users don't want to play with random players, there are other options than just abort. After all, chess should also be about respect.

suggestion:  left click on the piece/pawn you choose to move, and move your mouse to the square you want, visually verify it's location in/near center of the destination square, and left click.

this would overcome mouse drop problems.

adding another feature to overcome a "problem" for a relatively few number of users wouldn't be a productive use of programmer time - when there are so many other features they are working hard on adding to this site.

principle of "greatest benefit overall for the greatest number of users"

regards,

That tips does not work on live chess.

There is certainly other features with higher priority. But everyone has its point of views, and lower priorities one day may became higher priorities.

well... it seems obvious to me... Sometimes I will get matched up with a player who thinks they're HOT STUFF and don't want to play little old me, so they abort. Then I start a new game and there they are in all their glory!  So I abort... who wants to play a poor sport, after all?  So I start a new game - and lo and behold, there they are AGAIN.  GRAAAAARGH!!!!

Why should I be punished if they can't figure out how to adjust their seeks, and I'm sick of looking at 'em?!?!?

@ pauloalexabreu   works fine in live chess the way i described it.  I often do that in live blitz games.

Oh, I was expecting a menu and didn't figure it out. I rest my case then. Thanks for your tip.

well, I mean sometimes my mouse slips and I play Ke2 instead of Bc4...

then I have to abort.

sorry, but this is a lame excuse…if you're playing in a real tournment and touch a piece, you must move it, you can't say, b-b-but I meant to move the other piece

Indeed, but it happens a lot to me to move the correct piece to incorrect place due to drag and drop problems. for instance, e3 when I want e4.

Well then you've come to the right place, for I can solve your problem. Just click the piece you want to move, then click the square you wish to move it to! No dragging involved and no slips.

Now maybe you can help me with a problem I am having? See my forum post on Dec. 4th, “Pawns won't promote.”

I use to abort games for some reasons:

- players that I have been played before

- due to some "strange" user names

- I avoid players from some countries

- sometimes no reasons.

However, aborting a game I don't find it as an offense, unless the options for selecting your opponent will be improved.

I don't think any single one of those reasons can justify the abortion of a game. You can already see the rating, nationality and username of the people that have active seeks in the game-graph, so isnstead of making your own seeks, enter existing ones.

There are no legitimate reasons for abortion.  You made the choice and accepted the risks.  Live with the consequence.

“can_i_use...chair” ...you are flat-out wrong and owe “SparrowChess...” an apology. See my forum post on Dec. 4th, “Pawns won't promote.” Why should I play a game at a disadvantage?

What does "aborted by server" mean? Why does it happen?

It means that Live Chess killed the game because nobody was moving. (Each player gets ~20 seconds for their first move.)

This was introduced to protect players (who may have lost their own ability to abort - or who just don't want another abort on their record) from getting stranded in a game that's not going anywhere, through no fault of their own.

Details are in the Fair Play FAQ, about 1/3 down the page.

Samantha,

I think the harm is not allowing your opponent to win or lose while playing you.  If you start a game and even have an emergency come up while you are playing; i think you should resign.  After all these are only games.  If you are in a tournament and have to leave an active match for an emergency; you lose the match.

I personally don't mind if people abort a game if they don't want to play against me, I just find another game with someone who does. However, I don't abort games myself.

Today I have lost my internet connection during one game, and had my computer freeze on another game...which now counts as an abondaned game. It's bad enough losing games in this way without it counting against you as an abandodned game!!!

Occasional "aborts of necessity" and technology fails are nothing to worry about. Your Fair Play record strongly indicates good sportspersonship! :)

Thanks that's good to know! :)

It's very simple:

Set the rating parameters you're willing to play with before you start playing live chess games. That way you won't have to abort and it saves everyone time. If you can play a complicated game like chess then I'm sure you can carry out this simple task...

Next week I'll go over changing a lighbulb for anyone that hasn't figured that one out yet. Bring a friend just in case!

You can't change the parameters, silly.

You can only change the parameters of the seeks you see in the seek graph. That doesn't stop people who do not meet your parameters from accepting your seek and "blocking" a player doesn't prevent them from accepting your seek either.

Do some research before you say something ignorant next time.

I'm almost positive that this isn't true. After reading this I went and checked. I have my parameter set to -20,+100. I was able to see seeks from people rated 200 points over me on several parts of the chart just with a passing glance. However, I don't believe that you can see seeks from players who have you excluded in their parameters, so you got it exactly backwards. I have never, ever, been paired with a played who wasn't within the range that I set before I started playing.

TRON84NH

aborting games would only be wise if you were paired up against a much advanced opponent compared to yourself. otherwise just play

DeepGreene

Hear ye! Hear ye!

If you want to change the wee dots you see in the Graph, make haste to Settings (upper right or below the board, depending on which version of Live you're using) and look to the "Filters" tab!

Elsewise, if you want to Send a Challenge that can be answered only by opponents of a specific rating-range, use the rating options below the Start Game button!

You HAVE the power!! :)

That's how it's worked ever since I joined in August...

Well Mr. Self-Richeous it looks like you have said something ignorant this time around.

Seriously? Unless it 'changed like..sometime TODAY, you are wrong.

Oops, how embarassing.

Chess4001

I personally think this is an excellent feature as pointless aborts will be reduced.
