Why resign after one move? can't you just abort??

Here was a game where my opponent didn't wanna play:

Why did he resign? Can't he just abort?

wsmith23

I think after you have touched a piece, you can only abort by resigning the game (or abandoning the board), both of which means losing the game.

Abandoning is a grace given by chess.com; normally, you're committed to a game one you sit down and shake hands.

Because it's forced mate in 214 moves.

@ wsmith23,

chess.com doesn't have a touch piece rule. As long as it is move 1 you can abort the game.

Ps. I know aborting is cheap but its allowed on chess.com

Psychic!

Can you predict who I'll marry?

wsmith23

I know chess.com does not have a touch-move rule. But the rule is: You move your first piece, you commit to the game.

aman_makhija

But my opponent didn't move his first piece. Only I did.

wsmith23

Oh, in that case I don't know. Maybe xe did not want to risk having their account restricted (which happens if you abort too often). Or xe cannot abort any more because their account IS already restricted.

aman_makhija

Ah, forgot about people's accounts being restricted. Ok.

NO WAY!

When you abort games too often, the abort button becomes a resign button; the only way to abort those games without losing is to stall and let the server abort.

...or, this player is a sandbagger and is trying to drop their rating below some threshold...

Yeah, so why didn't he stall?

Yeah, so why didn't he stall?

Maybe he didn't know that, maybe he's a sandbagger like others have said.  There's no real way to know unless you ask the person directly.  Additionally, if you get the abort by stalling, you get restricted from even sending out a seek.
