Gallagher - Balashov 1991
That was great! Took a while to work out, with two key moves at the beginning.
I'm guessing that Joe played the King's Gambit in this game.
Good guess! :D
I had some clues: the lack of any central pawns indicated an "open game" (1. e4 e5), the missing White f-pawn indicated likely to be either King's Gambit or Vienna Game/Gambit, and finally the fact that Joe is a published aficionado of the King's Gambit, all pointed in the right direction.
p.s. My chess buddies and I used to watch him play at the now defunct Hastings Challengers tournament, during the early eighties. He had a very aggressive style, hanging pieces, labyrinthine tactical sequences and unexpected knock-out punches. As teenagers we were overawed and used to call any particularly brutal tactics that we happened to play "Doing a Joe!". A really fierce competitor.
