Hi this is my first time ever posting a puzzle, so I hope I didn't mess it up!

Eebster

Why not 1. ... g6! ?

xiii-Dex

Is it fixed now?

xiii-Dex

I know it is a bit different than originally.

why not 2. Qg8#?

OBIT

1. Bxf6 also works.  The threat is Rxe8#.

If 1...Qb5 2. Bxg7+ Kg8 3. Bh6+ Kh8 4. Rg8+ Kxg8 5. Qg4+ and mates.

If 1...Ne6 2. Rxg7 leads to mate.  The threat is 3. Rxh7+ Kxh7 4. Qh5+, while 2...h6 (2...Nxg7? 3. Rxe8#) 3. Qh5 and mates.

Knight is protecting that square.

brfc

No, the knight is pinned

MsCloyescapade

If the d knight moves to e6 it can slow the mate by 2 moves... even if the e rook is sacraficed it add the rook potection to the dark squared bishop. or if h6 the knight protects against the queen and if the bishop takes the king can move out of harms way for an extra move.

-Good puzzle for your first time. Keep it up!

Let me know if I'm mistaken...

Wrong, 2 Qg8 is checkmate, the Knight is pinned by the Bishop on c3.

Looks like it to me.
