Why didn't white do Ke2?
because there are two knights protecting that square.
On 4 there are no knights
On 2 after Qd1+ White coulda taken a free queen because Whites Queen is on f3 and can do Qxd1
Also on 4 he coulda taken the rook by doing fxe3 and not have to move his king
