Retire from Online Tournament

If I retire from an online tourney, who will advance to the next round in my place?

I am currently playing in round 1 of an online tourney where 2 players of each group of 4 advance to the next round. I have excellent chances to advance. But I do not want to because it takes too long and I basically have no time to play it properly.

If I would finish 1st or 2nd in my group after Round 1, and then retire, does the next guy behind me advance? Or do I have to resign the remaining round 1 games in order not to place 1st or 2nd in my group?

Basically I want the next guy behind me to advance. I do not want to earn a spot for the next round, then retire, and my spot will remain empty.

How do online tourneys work in this respect? Thanks for clarifying.

Finish your games in the round, then retire. The next placed player will get your spot.
