Of them all I prefer the orange background one (referred to as "Garish" by one member... which I can see from that perspective). I also very much like this one that looks very similar to the website logo. The white "Chess" and orange ".com" is a nice contrasty touch... without being Garish. Laughing Of the others that seem rather minimalist, I prefer the green checkerboard to the black and white one (The B/W variety is way to drab for my tastes). I also prefer the offset close-up pawn to the centered close-up. I think this pawn is too close to the viewer. I think this one is just right. Maybe add the logo in this one to it.

My rating:

look at the top of this page take the logo only the pawn and the letter "C". This is my choice for the logo Cool

I actually like the one with the orange background too.  iPhone icons tend to be very bright.

And don't forget lickable!!  Tongue out

Hmmm... the more I look at them, the more I'm liking the basic idea behind this one. I like the "Chess.com" and how it looks a lot like the website's logo. If it just had a better punch of color...

Second that. The C-Pawn can be easily identified as chess.com.  Its fantastic. With a little bit of color it could make a great icon.

I disagree with Enormous Gastropod about having an icon that has the name of the site. that will either be redundant or useless depending on if the text is readable. either way, its not as good as the C-Pawn IMO.

The example below is ok, but I think the C-Pawn above is great.

Wink I second this, not only the choice of simply the pawn with the "C" but also the explanation of the idea.

PD:I always been fun of K.I.S.S. phylosofy (The KISS principle. KISS is originally an acronym for "Keep it Simple, Stupid") But I know there are a lot no-KISS funs and there are other good choices I have see in this forum for the logo. The important is the app!!! ;)

Hmmm... interesting how a thing can be perceived so differently amongst people. Smile If you had asked me to envision the iPhone's interface from memory, I wouldn't have remembered that there was a title underneath each icon. I simply look at the icon and my memory tells me what the thing is. (BTW, I tend to be a very visual learner, so that might be telling)

I looked at the icons of the various apps on my iPhone and found something interesting in my personal experience. The icons that had the name of the product on it I knew immediately what it was. Examples include Pandora, I Can Haz Cheeseburger (don't laugh!), Dark Nova and various Bible softwares. I was not, however, able to immediately identify many of the one that did not include the app's name in the icon. Examples include ChessClock, Cube Runner and Shazam. Of course, after repeated usage I begin to recognize an app by sight but even then I might not remember the app's name. For instance, I know what the icon for my Remote Desktop tool is (it's just a small icon of a Windows desktop) but I don't know what it's name is (I just remembered that it's WinAdmin, but only after deliberately looking at the app's name; not something I do often). Same for iSSH. Yeah, that icon is my SSH tool... but what's it's name? Err... I couldn't remember off the top of my head.

Maybe I'm the kind of person that drives user interface scientists crazy. Laughing

I agree in part with Enourmus Gastropod. My choice is the C pawn without the mane, only the logo; but for some user ( the new ones and not only new ones ) can be helpfull to have a logo with the whole "chess.com" logo. I still preffer c pawn because as Enourmus said with a little use you associate the logo with the program and in fact is the same logo that is in the web!!! ;).

But the important thing is to get a great software ;)
