Your Move for iPad

I'm a pretty avid chess player, and I also write software. I've put together a pretty nice FICS client for the iPad, and its available for download from iTunes. I have a limited number of freebie download codes that I will give out until they run out, send a PM if you want one.

If you have ever played a lot of games, especially with the same person, eventually you will get tired of playing the same openings over and over. That's what led me to discover Fischer Random chess, which in turn is what led me to discover the Free Internet Chess Server (freechess.org)

The Free Internet Chess Server is one of the oldest and biggest chess servers online. There is never any shortage of games to watch or people to play against. At any given time there are hundreds of games going on, of people all over the world, playing chess.

I like to play chess and I like to watch chess. Your Move is the FICS interface that I wanted to use but couldn't find on the iPad.

The design of the board is based on the green and white tournament and club sets that we've all played on. The pieces are all original illustrations based on the old chess books we've all learned from. The clock is a simple digital display and the board itself and its highlights have a rich and subtle texture that you can play on for hours.

Connect to FICS as a guest or create an account to track your game history and rating. Seek a new game with your own settings or browse the existing game searches in the "Sought" tab. If you don’t feel like playing, you can observe games in play by players of all skill levels from Novice to Grand Master.

Use the Seek interface to tell the server what type of game you want to play and what skill level player you want to play against, or browse the list of published Seeks to find the game you’re looking for.

Observe multiple games at once. While playing. Tap any game you want to watch from the list of games being played, and you will start observing it. Switch between games you are observing by swiping the board to the left or right. Alternately, you can unlock the board and allow the display to scroll to the last updated game. You can share your games by publishing them online.

Keep track of the games you are playing and watching in the "My Games" tab. During a game you can click on any move in the "History" panel to view that move. You can also chat with other chess players in the FICS chat room.

Play straight chess or variants such as Suicide chess (win by losing all your pieces) or Fischer Random (pieces are shuffled so every game is different.) And you can chat with people playing.

My goal was to make a FICS client for the iPad that I could use and I hope you enjoy playing on it as much as I enjoyed making it. Feel free to stop by the support forums if you have any questions, Your Move is a labour of love and is going to be an actively supported product.

Hi there, generally i like the idea of a fics client with a clean Interface. So i downloaded your app to give "your move" a try. First the good points: the interface is nicely laid out and I like the board. The app seems very stable, over wifi at least. What I don't like at all is the piece set. I know it is a question of taste, but this have to be some very old chess books where the set was used before. It is everything but distinguishable in contrast to the good board. Isn't there any possibility to save some preferences? Do I have to login manually every time I start the app? That is a bit annoying.... Given the spare feature list "your move" is overpriced. I hope you take my comments as constructive criticism, this could be a good app, at the moment it is not. Regards

Hi Eckensteher,

Thank you for trying my software and thank you for your comments.

The next update to the software (which should be out next week once it gets approved by Apple) will save your FICS username (but not your password) to make the login process easier.  I considered saving the password as well, but ultimately decided not to - I thought people might be upset if someone picked up their iPad and lowered their rating.

You are right, the piece design is very old, deliberately so.  I really enjoyed the style of Irving Chernev books, and the piece design is consistent with his books, and others from that era such as Reinfeld, as well as a few other texts I picked up here and there while learning chess.  If you have some suggestions for more modern books whose pieces you like feel free to post them here and I'll take a look.

As for the price, I thought it was fair based on other similar products on the store.  Hopefully as I add more features it will become a more compelling purchase.

Thanks again for your comments.

Hi again,

after rereading my comments i made earlier today, i must say that they sound actually a bit harsh. The last sentence was intended to state that the app has not used its full potential. It is in no way a bad app. I'm german, so things i write or say in english are sometimes a bit off. That said, hang on, you already did a decent job. Smile

regards

P.S.: i play a lot on chess.com and here i like the classic pieces or the alpha pieces best. i think the classic pieces would look excellent on your classy board. It's just my taste, but it would be great to have a choice.

Hi There

Would love to download and try your FICS client but am REALLY put off by having to enter in my FICS password each time.  If you would consider changing this, or offering it as a setting so that people can opt in or out of having their login details then please let me know!  Otherwise, I'm happy stick with iChessPack HD which is a very good FICS and ICC client.

Wow

i completely overlooked iChessPack, now that's a reference for a good FICS client.

Because it's version 2.6 at the moment, it's not fair to compare but it is a benchmark.

Love the app, thank you! But I have a possibly dumb question. In the command window, how do Inget from GEN to HELP or SAY or the other commands? I can see the first few but not execute them
