I learned the moves when I was seven and I'm still no nearer to understanding the game. Sometimes it's beautiful. More often it's an incomprehensible mess. I like the names of the great chess masters: Alekhine, Capablanca, Nimzovich. My favourite games were played by Akiba Rubinstein. He was the greatest player never to be crowned world champion.
