Right now we call it "Email Chess". But what do you think we should call this kind of non-live, asynchronous chess?

I like turn-based chess but it seems to be pretty well-known and established around the net as correspondence chess, thats the name most people would recognize it as.

I like Correspondence Chess.  To me, email chess means you are sending the moves to eachother via email, with no UI or chessboard or anything.

Correspondence Chess kind of implies that it is going to be a slow game, though. It's possible to play a game in "real-time" using this system, and since you can be notified by email when it's your move.. it seems logical to me that it should have a different name, and that name should be "Email Chess".

Hi Erik congratulations on your site, well laid out and good content designed well to sell products and services.

Don’t forget there is a site dedicated online chess systems located at http://www.chessring.anyone4chess.com/ any site is welcome to join.

Regarding your poll on what type of chess you should call your online chess system, this is my vote and if players really think about they might come to the same conclusion.

Please note, I am bias in this matter and I will only comment on the serious choices in your poll…..

My vote is for online turn based chess…

Email chess; implies that the moves are going over the net through a email client like outlook, thunderbird etc and this is the only method available for moves which is not the case from what I have seen….

Correspondence chess; players like to think of this type of chess when they think of online chess however, that was only because in reality their was only two types of chess before the internet and it was OTB or correspondence, if you really look at the chess provided by your site and most online sites there is no, arbitration, no penalties for being late, no rules for disputes, etc, etc, please review the correspondence rules for full details and you will clearly see this type of chess is not correspondence.

Message chess; please review the comments under email chess.

In truth you can call this chess anything you want, online turn based chess is however, the most accurate description of this type of chess even if you consider it somewhat simplistic.

Another note on this subject, which webmasters and players forget when dealing with this subject, and I know because I always have to explain my reasoning to everyone, most recently to the  people of WCL which is owned by ICC (by the way they now understand) is this type of chess deserves to be recognized as chess entity onto itself, evidence of this is based clearly on your poll, and something that is always forgotten in these conversations it that in reality when it come to the internet, this type of chess (online turn based) is the leader in it’s field, correspondence clubs and organization just entering the online media over the last few years are actually the followers…

As I said I am bias…

I think that the time controls imply that these are slow games :).  Now if you add "real-time" time controls, I would agree with you.  And really, the name doesn't matter, but this chess isn't played through email Tongue out

Also, I dont mean to sound like a jerk, but I just think the name "Email Chess" does not do this system justice, since email chess usually means there are no frills - just sending notation back and forth via email Smile.

Isn't chess always turn based? I.e. first my turn then your turn and so on. Maybe not a good idea to call it that.

I vote for Correspondence Chess. I bet there are some kind of standard rules you could apply in that case.

Email is a shortened form for electronic mail so I would say email chess should be called e-chess.
