Gukesh Becomes 2nd Youngest GM In History

IM Rakesh

At the age of 12 years, 7 months, and 17 days, Indian prodigy Gukesh Dommaraju became the second youngest grandmaster in chess history. He scored his third grandmaster norm at the 17th Delhi International Chess Grandmaster Open today in New Delhi, India. Despite the recent torrid tournament schedule for Gukesh, the world record of Sergey Karjakin still narrowly stands, this time by just 17 days! He had a blazing start as he started with 4.5/5 and then drew three strong GMs to have great...

Ian Nepomniachtchi took sole lead in round three of the Tata Steel Chess Tournament in Wijk aan Zee, the Netherlands. The Russian grandmaster reached 2.5/3 after beating a so far struggling Vladimir Kramnik. There were two more winners: Ding Liren defeated Jorden van Foreest, who was very close to drawing the Chinese GM in a bishop ending. Jan-Krzysztof Duda recovered from his loss on Sunday as he won a good game vs Vladimir Fedoseev.  Nepomniachtchi played the solid 5.Re1 against Kramnik's...

The Secrets Of Prearranged Draws In Chess

The Secrets Of Prearranged Draws In Chess

GM Gserper

Prearranged draws are the reality of chess. You might hate it, you might fight it, but if two players want to make a draw, they will find the way to do it. Sometimes such players just agree to a draw before the game and when the game starts they try to trade pieces as quickly as possible to reach the desired result. There are designated opening variations that help you to achieve the goal quickly and efficiently. Like this one: You can find about 1,500 games like this in the database. Don't get...

Spectre (@LoonySpectre) January 15, 2019 Results as per chessgames.com data, pre-Tata Steel 2019. Decided to put my recently-rechristened "Bestuzhev Index" to use. If we believe...

PRO Chess Teams Power Up For Week Two

PRO Chess Teams Power Up For Week Two

FM MikeKlein

The new scoring system of the Professional Online Rapid (PRO) Chess League means teams aren't just trying to eke out victories. They're trying to demolish their opponents and run up big scores. So, get ready for some teams to use some big names to try to open up big leads early in the season. How did that play out in week one? Unsurprisingly, the league top team, the St. Louis Arch Bishops (one of last year's semifinalists), produced the biggest score, along with the Montreal ChessBrahs. The Arch...

Bobby Fischer's Best Chess Quotes

Bobby Fischer's Best Chess Quotes

CHESScom

Bobby Fischer is easily the most famous chess player of all time. When Bobby spoke about chess naturally people listened! Here are ten of his famous quotes. 1. "1.e4 - Best by test." You can find a few games where Fischer started the game with 1.c4, or 1.Nf3, but without question, the most played first move by Bobby was 1.e4. "1.e4 - Best by Test!" 2. "I like the moment I crush a man's ego." Just play over a handful of Bobby Fischer's games, and you can easily sense his strong desire...

Dutch Comeback: Giri, Van Foreest Win In Tata Steel Chess Round 2

Dutch Comeback: Giri, Van Foreest Win In Tata Steel Chess Round 2

PeterDoggers

After losing their games in the first round, Dutch GMs Anish Giri and Jorden van Foreest bounced back with wins in the second round of the Tata Steel Chess Tournament in Wijk aan Zee, the Netherlands. A disappointing first day was followed by a much better second day for the local fans in Wijk aan Zee. The hundreds of spectators, most of them playing themselves in the traditional Weekender, saw both Giri and Van Foreest play (and win!) excellent games. The stage with the 28 players of the two groups....

Positional Player vs. Tactical Player

Positional Player vs. Tactical Player

IM Silman

I am going to do something a bit different. I am going to look at the games of the most prolific (and nicest), chess writer in the world: IM Cyrus Lakdawala. Of course, Fred Reinfeld, who died in 1964, wrote more than 100 chess books. That will be very hard to beat (Cyrus is just finishing his 41st book). Reinfeld also wrote non-chess books, approximately 260 in all! For me, it would be impossible to teach lots of students, play in tournaments (Cyrus won the National Open, the American Open, and...
