Big Island Chess Tournament 2023
When: Saturday, February 25th, 2023, 9:00am.
Where: Ainaloa Community Association. 16-303 Ainaloa Blvd. in Pāhoa.
Bring: A friend. Lunch, a chess set if you have one. Clocks will be provided.
Format: A tournament in two sections:
- Reserve or Beginner section for children or adults just learning to play and players rated below 1000.
- Open section for tournament players and anyone who wants to get a national rating.
Cost: $40 entry fee. Annual membership fee to the US Chess Federation.

& 10$ DISCOUNT FOR SENIORS AND ADDITIONAL FAMILY MEMBERS. ALL AGES ARE WELCOME.
Prizes: Medals in for top three finishers in both sections. Cash prizes based on entry fees.

Writing Moves: Writing down moves is not required. We recommend learning chess notation on YouTube or at www.chess.com/lessons/your-first-tournament.
Schedule: Each round begins after the previous one finishes. Each game can take up to an hour (30 minutes per player). The main tournament will finish between 3:00 and 4:00pm. Half-point byes available in any rounds if you have other commitments on that day or want a rest. There will be a short “blitz” tournament after the main tournament for players who still want to play more.
Parent Note: We recommend that you play for the fun of it. Beginners of all ages are highly encouraged to play. Players under age 16 must be accompanied by a guardian at all times!
Lunch: There will be a short lunch break around noon. Food is available in Pāhoa, about ten minutes away.
Method of payment: Payment must be received before 8:40am on Saturday, or player will receive a 1st round 1/2-point bye.
