Aurora Solstice Tournament
SoPo players, the next Scholastic Grand Prix (SGP) tournament will be held on Saturday, December 11, 2021. All SPHS students qualify for this event, just like the one we hosted on 11/13/21. This time, the location is Aurora, Maine. It's a very small town a few miles east of Bangor. Our team will be able to ride-share on a bus with Bonny Eagle chess players. I will treat you guys to pizza, snacks and drinks.
It is a Swiss tournament, just like the one we had here in SoPo, which means 4 rounds of play, no elimination. It's another chance to earn SGP points for yourself AND for our school. Did I mention there is a trophy at the end of the season and medals for top players? The more games you play, the more chances you have to score points.
If you are interested in playing this tournament, you need to consider a few things.
Please be aware that this will require an all day time investment on your part. Your whole Saturday will be spent on a road trip and playing chess. First, we have to get all of our players to Bonny Eagle High School to catch a bus. THEN, Bangor is about 140 miles from Bonny Eagle. That will take about 2.5 hours of driving. THEN, we have to get back home. Do the math: it's about 7 hours on the road, but we will all be together and it could be a lot of fun! It will be an early morning and you probably won't get home until about 6pm.
We will talk more at Chess Club. See you on Thursday!
