Obviously, the goal in chess is to checkmate your opponents king. Another goal is to force your opponent into resignation. However, in the endgame, when few pieces remain, you need to know these basic checkmates in order to win. We will go over the king and queen mate first, then the king and rook mate, then the king and two bishop mate, followed by the bishop and knight mate (very very difficult, I don't know it that well) and the very rare two knight mate when your opponent has a pawn, and lastly, two rook mate.

Two rook mate: put every thing in the starting position. 1.Ra7 Kf8 2.Rh8#

King and Queen mate: First, you have to make your queen and the opponents king a knight step away. Wherever the king moves, follow him. but when the king goes to the corner, bring your king in. when your king is one step away, bring your queen over to give checkmate.

King and rook mate: put every thing in the starting position. 1.rook a7 is to restrict the black king. bring your king closer and make your opponent get the opposition so your rook can come all the way down to a8. however, if the king is on b8, make your rook go to h8. Then, make your rook to go to the right one square, make your rooks wall smaller and smaller. until you can't do it any smaller or else stalemate, bring your rook bring your king to g6 (or b6) and bring your rook down to one of the squares on the eighth rank except the one close to the enemy king.
